n Forest Land
Georgia has many things
of which to be proud. One of
the greatest is our 26 million
acres of forest land. More
than 89,900 of that is located
in Forsyth County.
You realize how important
our forests are when you
stop and think that they pro
vide the raw materials for an
industry valued at over $5
billion a year. That’s how
much the timber industry
contributes annually to the
economy of Georgia.
In fact, the forest industry
is the second largest in
dustry in the state. Only tex
tile manufacturing is bigger.
And when it comes to
timber, Georgia ranks right
up there as one of the top
states in the nation. Only
Oregon and Washington cut
more timber in a year than
we do. And much of their
timber is cut on public lands,
such as national forests,
when you consider just the
amount of timber grown on
commercial forest land,
Georgia is number one.

FUTURE GENERATIONS
According to the Exten
sion Service forest resources
department, more than
170,000 people own forest
land in Georgia. Foresters
tell us that the production of
timber present and future
generations depends on how
these lands are managed.
At the present time, they
aren’t being managed very
well. In fact, they are pro
ducing at less than one-half
their potential. The foresters
believe that good manage
ment practices, including
harvesting and utilization,
can double timber’s con
tribution to the state’s
economy. That would be $lO
billion instead of just $5
billion-quite an increase.
Ted Walker, one of the Ex
tension foresters, says many
Georgia landowners are
already doing a good job. He

bases this on participation in
the Tree Farm Program,
sponsored by the American
Forest Institute.
According to Walker,
Georgia leads the nation in
number of acres in tree
farms-the total is 7,852,335.
And the number of actual
tree farms-2,171-is third in
the nation.
Walker says tree farm
system recognizes private
woodland owners who are
carrying out good practices
on their land. He adds that
anyone can apply to the
American Forest Institute to
be included in the program.

Weather
Watch
To March 15
Georgia farmers and
gardeners apparently are
not through with the cold
and wet weather yet.
The latest 30-day outlook
from the National Weather
Service forecasts more of the
same. The cold and wet is
expected to continue
through mid-March.
Consequently, spring land
preparation and other field
work may suffer extended
delays. The Weather Service
is advising farmers to have
their equipment ready to
take advantage of any
periods of open weather.
Georgia rainfall from
mid-February to mid-
March normally totals
between four and six inches.
Rains are usually more
frequent by early March.
The 1 3.629% rate will be paid from February 28,

Or to put it another way
you have only about 30 days
left in which to stand up and
be heard concering the
future direction of conserva

Actually we want public
comment on the Soil and
Water Resources Conserva

Comments are invited on not
only proposed programs but
USDA’s process of carrying
out the Act and the published
documents.
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture has proposed
C'ontinued below-normal
temperatures will cause cold
stress on poultry and
livestock to remain a
problem. Heating demands
for livestock structures will
be high, and pastures likely
will show only limited
growth.
Daytime temperatures by
mid-March normally
increase to the 60s, with lows
ranging from the upper 30s
north to the upper 40s south.
South Georgia usually has
its last freeze by the middle
of March.

growers that below normal
temperatures extending

be met for most varieties.

In an effort by the District to further broaden the base of
participation and interest in Soil and Water Conservation a
group of select citizens and businessmen are enlisted each
year in an Affiliate Member Program. Each member is
given a Certificate of Membership and is invited to a banquet
held each year in their honor. In 1979 the District enlisted a
total of 75 members.
The District Supervisors would like to express their sincere
thanks to these indidviduals and businessmen for their sup
port during the past year. The District feels that through this
program they may better meet the needs and opportunities of
the Upper Chattahoochee River Soil and Water Conservation
District.
I am sure the District Supervisors would like to increase
this membership this year to start the 80’s off to a good start.
The local District Supervisors are Amon L. Com and E.H.
Reid.
