Bulldogs Win 8-AAAA Championship
f Steve Bennett
Alive And Well
■
Basketball is alive and well and prospering at Forsyth
County High School. For the first time since no one can seem
to recall, Forsyth County High is sending not only one but two
representatives to the State Basketball Tournament.
By virtue of their play in last week’s region tournament at
Cedar Shoals in a place called “The Pit” the Lady Bulldogs
and the Bulldogs earned spots in the opening rounds of the
state tournament.
Despite sporting won-loss credentials that weren’t nearly
as impressive sounding as their opponents, the Lady Dogs
showed up at “The Pit” with their scrapping, hawking
defense and handed the number one representative from the
North Sub-region, Clarke Central a very exciting 41-37 loss.
The following night the Lady Dogs weren’t as high for the
championship game as they were the night before or so it ap
peared, as they lost to Stephens County. However, a state
tournament had been earned and that is quite an accomplish
ment for a team who some didn’t figure would win five games
all year.
The Bulldogs on the other hand are right where many
believed they would be before the season ever started. There
is one thing about the Bulldogs that has become their
trademark this season while compiling a 23-3 record. They
like to make it exciting. They are for sure a most entertaining
group as far as close basketball games are concerned. They
seem to thrive on giving the crowd their money’s worth. Of
course, it also tends to wear on the nerves of Coach Meadows
but that’s what he gets paid for.
Both teams are scheduled to play this week, the boys
Thursday 8:30 p.m. at Tech, against Sprayberry and the girls
Friday 5:30 p.m. at Cobb County Civic Center: against
Wheeler. Assuming each win their respective games they
will advance to Saturday’s play and current information has
the boys at 2 p.m. and the girls at 8:30 p.m.
Wherever, whenever and against whoever do your best to
make it to the games, both girls and boys. It will be worth
your time and effort.
Dogs Advance To Finals
With Dunwoody Victory
The Forsyth County
3uUdogs continued to extend
;heir winning streak as well
as their basketball season
last week by taking the
Region 8 AAAA basketball
tournament with victories
over Dunwoody and
Johnson. These victories put
the Dogs in the first round of
the state tournament, which
starts this week at Georgia
Tech.
Actually, the Bulldogs
guaranteed themselves a
state berth last Friday, when
they defeated Dunwoody 75-
68. Monty Hammontree got
the Dogs started as he
scored the first two of his
game high 31 points. Dun
woody responded with three
points to take one of only two
leads they would have in the
game. The other one came
shortly thereafter with the
score 5-4, with five minutes
left in the quarter.
Ronny Bennett put the
Dogs back on top for good
with a steal and following
layup. The Dogs went on to
post a 16-11, first quarter
lead.
In the second quarter, For
syth continued to lead but
was never able to gain a con
siderable advantage with
Dunwoody cutting the lead to
as little as one twice during
the quarter. The Dogs’ big
gest lead during the quarter
came with less than a minute
left in the half when Scott
Durham hit to put Forsyth
up by seven at 30-23. By the
quarter’s end, however Dun
woody had matched Forsyth
point for point and the Dogs
lead at intermission was still
five at 30-25.
In the third quarter, points
by Steve Reece, Jeff Perry,
and Chip Housley offset
three baskets by Dunwoody
to give Forsyth a seven point
lead with four minutes left in
the period. But with the
score 38-31, Dunwoody
scored sue straight points to
pull within one. After swapp
ing baskets and with the
score 40-39, Forsyth’s favor,
the Bulldogs reeled off 11 con
secutive points and even
though Dunwoody scored the
final points of the quarter,
Forsyth held a 10 point lead
at 51-41 going into the final
period.
Early in the fourth period,
the Dogs continued to hold on
to an U point lead, but Dun
woody refused to give up and
with about six minutes left in
the game and Forsyth ahead
55-44, Dunwoody scored 10
unanswered points in about
two minutes to cut Forsyth’s
lead to one at 55-54. For the
next two minutes, Dunwoody
continued to hang tough and
fight back. With 1:59 left in
the game and the Dogs
desperately holding on to a
four point lead at 64-60, Ham
montree went to the foul line
in a bonus situation. He con
verted both free throws to
fmake it a six point game and
nine seconds later extended
'it to eight when he hit two
more free throws. Before the

A Dunwoody man seems to get hold of the ball during a rebound last week, but right up there
trying for the rebound are Bulldogs Joe Parker (23) and Monty Hammontree (20). Ham
montree was high scorer with 31 points while Parker grabbed four.
The Bulldogs of Coach Phil
Meadows and Forsyth Coun
ty High, made it 18 straight
last Friday night, as they
defeated Johnson High of
Gainesville for the Region 8
AAAA championship.
Forsyth was already
assured a place in the open
ing round of state tourna
ment play before the
Johnson game by virtue of
their win over Dunwoody the
previous night.
The Dogs fell behind very
quickly as the game began
and were down 4-0, when
Bulldog Jeff Perry socred
four straight points to tie the
game 4-4. Johnson went back
on top by two only to have
Steve Reece knot the score
again. The Bulldogs then fell
behind 11-6 thanks to a poor 4-
16 shooting from the floor,
plus four first-quarter tur
novers. Ronny Bennett,
however scored the final
points of the quarter to cut
lead Johnson’s to 3, at 11-8 as
the quarter ended.
Bennett scored again as
the second quarter began to
cut the lead to one but this
was as close as the Dogs
could get until Monty Ham
montree scored to tie the
game at 14.
Bennett then gave Forsyth
its first lead of the night only
to have Johnson tie the game
again. Reece put the Dogs
back up by two and then the
lead was one with 4:00 gone
in the quarter. Forsyth’s
Chip Housley hit two free
throws to give the Dogs a 3-
point advantage, at 20-17, but
Johnson rallied to score
eight unanswered points and
take the lead at 25-20 with
two and a half minutes left in
quarter ended Hammontree
added six more points from
the charity stripe and along
with another point from Ben
nett the Bulldogs held off
iDunwoody to claim a 75-68
win and a spot in the state
tournament.
Statistics for the game
were amazingly close at
least in field goal percentage
and free throw percentage.
The Bulldogs shot 51 per cent
from the floor hitting 24 of 47
shots while Dunwoody
recorded 50 per cent being
good on 25 of 50 attempts.
the half. Johnson added two
points to their total before
half-time, but Reece
retaliated for the Dogs and
scored six points himself in
the final two minutes and
pulled Forsyth to within one
at intermission 27-26.
In the third period, the
Bulldogs could manage only
two baskets from the floor in
11 attempts while Johnson
was good on 4 of 11 tries.
However, Johnson was
charged with nine fouls in
the quarter which sent the
Dogs to the free throw line
for nine attempts of which
they converted 7. The
Bulldogs never assumed the
lead until 3:55 of the quarter
when Housely hit to give
Forsyth a 31-29 lead. The
Dogs extended this lead to
37-29 with 1:30 to go but
Johnson rallied in the final
minute of play to score the
final six points of the quarter
and trailed the Dogs by two
points, 37-35 headed into the
final stanza.
Johnson managed to
recapture the lead at 6:31 of
the fourth quarter, with a 40-
39 score but Forsyth’s Joe
Parker regained the lead for
the Dogs at 6:17. Forsyth was
to hold the lead the re
mainder of the game.
Johnson pulled to within one
at 47-46 late in the game but
another basket by Parker
with 1:17 remaining gave
Forsyth a 3-point lead. The
Dogs managed to hold off
Johnson in the last minute of
play despite missing four
free throw attempts and giv
ing Johnson the last shot of
the game with two seconds
left.
From the charity stripe the
Dogs hit 72 per cent making
26 of 36 attempts. Dunwoody
hit 17 of 24 from the line or 71
per cent. The big difference
was in the turnover depart
ment where Forsyth com
mitted only 12 while forcing
Dunwoody into 19 miscues.
