" Repent
ikihhb,
My friend Doug and I were talking early the other morning
about temptations that we must face and the fact that the
more serious one is about their commitment to Christ, the
more powerful and yet subtle are the temptations to sin.
Being a Christian in no way delivers one from temptation.
In fact temptations seem to increase. Some things about the
old life no longer have the power to tempt, but new ones arise
and there is battle to do on new and strange battlefields.
How important it is that Christians remember that the
Church is the company of forgiven sinners who must daily
wage war with Satan. There is absolutely no room for looking
down at one who has fallen. The correct posture for us is to be
kneeling down to pick up the fallen one and then leading him
back to repentance, forgiveness and fellowship. Who of us
could possibly be so foolhardy as to say we can no longer sin?
Who of us would not want someone near to pick us up and help
us back on the track? Who of us doesn’t want to be loved
enough that someone would reach out to help and restore us?
Too often our envy of someone causes us to gloat when they
err and we exhibit an “I told you so” attitude of smug
superiority. The Christian must remember that any or all of
his sins are enough to keep him out of eternal fellowship with
God and without His grace and forgiveness made accessible
by our repentant spirits and trust in Jesus, we would be
miserably doomed. We can in no way condone that sins of
another any more than they should condone ours, but we
must remember that our attitude toward them has much to
do with their desire to repent and be restored. A Christ like
spirit is so essential.

One thing about being a
Christian that a good many
people find hard to unders
tand is the idea of dying to
the old life and being raised
to the new life. Resurrection
is important. But, it doesn’t
only mean physical death
and life after death in
heaven. A believer
understands this also means
dying to sin and living to be
more Christlike right now.
We die to the glitter and
glamour of this world. We
die to conforming to our old
selfish ways. We die to
following the ways of natural
man.
Many Christians are look
ing for new life without dying
to the old one. Paul talks
about this in I Cor. 15, using
the illustration of the death
of a seed to make possible a
harvest of grain.
We talk about resurrec
tion, yet refuse to try plan
ting our old life in death. On
ly in this way is a harvest
possible. The Apostle Paul
died to his old way of life. He
had been very successful us
ing worldly standards. But,
if he had not done that, he

This is a good way to start
any walk with the Lord: Dy
ing to sin and self.
The Lord Jesus voluntarily
gave His life for us. Now we
must be willing to follow
Him. Unless and until we do,
we can never experience the
new life in Him. The old dies.
It was nailed to the cross
even as He was. This we
need to do desperately in
these days. The world
presses heavily upon us. It
wants us to conform to its
ways. It entices us with its
sparkling attractions. It will
not understand when we do
not pattern our decisions
after its methods.
But one thing it will do.
The world will surely watch
a believer who makes this
kind of choice. Worldly peo
ple will eyeball this action.
We need to study, learn
and practice those things
Christ has taught us. His
way does work. He is the on
ly answer.

New Birth Comes
By Believing In Jesus
BY REV. JIMMY BARNES
Evangelist
The Lord works in ways
which are mysterious to
man, but I am so thankful
that as the Lord said in
Isaiah 55:8-9, “My thoughts
are not your thoughts.
Neither are your ways my
ways saith the Lord. For as
the heavens are higher than
the earth, so are my ways
higher than your ways and
my thoughts higher than
your thoughts.”
I stated last week that we
would discuss the new birth
which was a mystery to all
before this age.
I happened to be in so
meone’s home and the t.v.
was on a station which was
broadcasting a program that
I know all of you are familiar
with. They call themselves a
club. The host was deliver
ing an address on the third
chapter of John, which is the
new birth. I can only tell you
how disgusted I became
when I heard this man, who
millions of people think is
such a great man of God,
distort and butcher this all
important teaching.
His comments were, I
believe, I think, and it could
mean, never did he realte to
other scriptures. I cannot
believe that he himself
understood what Jesus was
teaching. If he cannot
understand this, how can he
be capable of teaching any
doctrine at all? Now, let’s go
to the scriptures and see
what thus saith the Lord.
Jesus said to Nicodemus in
John 3:5, except a man be
born of water and of the
spirit, he cannot enter into
the kingdom of God. Now
just hold onto this scripture
and lets go to others to see
what it means.
Paul tells us in Romans
10:9, that if we confess with
our mouth the Lord Jesus
and believe in our heart that
God hath raised him from
the dead, thou shalt be sav
ed. That is born again.
In Ephesians 2:8-9, He
says, for by grace are ye
saved through faith, and that
not of yourselves it is the gift
of God, not of works lest any
man should boast.
These scriptures make it
plain that the new birth
comes by believing only in

So what does Jesus mean

Again let the scriptures

shall they believe in him of
whom they have not heard,
and how shall they hear

water the he (Jesus) shall
give shall never thirst again.
By these scriptures we
know that the water he
speaks of is the word. Now,
lets look at another scripture
in John 6:44. Jesus says no
man can come unto me ex
cept the father draw him. So,
by scripture we conclude
that by hearing the word of
God concerning Jesus as our
sacrifice, and having it
revealed to us as truth by the
spirit of God, we then may be
our own choice except or re
ject Jesus, our salvation.
If at that time of convic
tion we confess Jesus as
Romans 10:9, tells us, and
except him into our lives.
The spirit of God then takes
us (the inner man) back in
time to the cross and bap
tizes or places us if you will,
into the body of Christ.
Remember God is not con
fined in time as we are. He is
past, present and future. In
his body we are crucified,
put to death and then as God
raised him from the dead, so
are we born again in him. We
now begin a new life
although still in the flesh yet
a new creation with a new
nature which is devine II
Peter 1:4.
How can I make such a
statement? Paul says in Gal.
2:20. I am crucified with
Christ, never the less I live,
yet not I but Christ liveth in
me, and the life I now live in
the flesh, I live by faith in the
Son of God, who loved me
and gave himself for me.
Only the perfect sinless
blood of Jesus could cleanse
a sinner such as you and I,
and it is done literaly, yet
without our being aware of it
until we realize the new
nature which we receive
when we are born again.
Water baptism is the first
step in following the Lord
Jesus into his service, which
all that are saved are called.
How can anyone teach that it
is essential to salvation, fur

thermore how can anyone
teach or believe that you can
receive a baptism of the Ho
ly Spirit, after you are saved
when it is the baptism of the
Holy Spirit into the body of
Christ that saves.
I Cor. 6:19, tells us that we
are the temple of God, that is
God in the person of the Holy
Spirit lives inside you and I.
What more could there be.
The question now is not how
much of the spirit do you
have, you have it all, but how
much of you does the spirit
have.
The great experience that
people seek is not a baptism
of the spirit but a filling of
the spirit. This is done by ful
ly commiting ourselves to
him and a daily confessing of
our sins.
Let no one deceive you into
thinking that another person
is higher in standing with
God than you yourself,
because all who are born
again are sons of God and
have equality in Christ. Sin
in our life will quench the
spirit and break fellowship
with God, but never will it
sever the relationship.

W Jr \ Basic Questions

Today’s question deals
with the prayer of confes
sion. What is the meaning
and the purpose of confess
ing our sins? Being able to
confess our sins means two
things:
1. It means that the Holy
Spirit of God is active in our
lives as he leads us to
recognize that what we have
done is wrong.
2. It also means that we
have the desire to have it
taken out of our lives and
hearts.
The purpose of confession
is to release us from our op
position to God.
How should we confess our
sins? In Luke 18:10-13
Jesus spoke of a story of
two men who went to the
temple to pray (a Pharisee
and Publican)-- The
Pharisee said, “God, I thank
Thee that I am not as other
men who are extortioners,
unjust, adulterers. I fast
twice in the week, I give
tithes of all that I possess.”
The Publican: ‘Would not
lift up so much as his eyes
unto heaven, but smote upon
his breast, saying, “God be

merciful to me a sinner.”
Jesus said that the
Publican went to his house
justified rather than the
other. The Pharisee was self
righteous and critical of
others. The Publican was
aware of how bad he was. He
was: sincere: bowed his
head; humble: he referred
to himself as a sinner;
reliable: on God’s mercy in
stead of dwelling on his past.
From this we come to the
method by which we should
confess our sins:
First: We should be able to
realize how far we have gone
from God’s teachings and
ethics.
Second: We must depend,
and be aware of tl|e forgiv
ing love of God which recon
ciles us to Himself. The pur
pose of confession is not to
deepen our awareness of our
weaknesses but to make us
more conscious of God’s
power.
Third: Confess in a
sincere, humble and honest
prayer for your sins. Having
confessed your sins, be
assured of God’s
forgiveness.
