GLA Sponsors Seminar
The Georgia Lung Asso
ciation is sponsoring a Res
piratory Distress Syndrome
Seminar for medical profes
sionals on Thursday, Sept.
25, at the Clayton General
Hospital in Riverdale.
The day-long conference
and workshop will be con
ducted by the Emory Uni
versity School of Medicine,
Division of Neonatal/Peri
natal Medicine.
According to Jeanne Nel
son, GLA program director,
the seminar is structured to
help update physicians,
nurses and respiratory ther
apists on the advancements
in recognition and treatment
of RDS babies.
Respiratory distress syn
drome, or hyaline mem
brane disease, is a critical
respiratory condition in new
born babies, which results in
10,000 premature infant
deaths annually in the U.S.
“At one time, over 40,000
babies died annually from
RDS. Medical research,
modern neonatal intensive
care units and newly devel
oped, highly effective medi
cal techniques have done a
great deal to reduce the
mortality rate,” Ms. Nelson
explained.
Speakers include: William

witz, M.D., Zeeba Najak,

THAWING MEAT
Keeping ground beef cold
while it is thawing is nec
essary to prevent the growth
of harmful bacteria, accord
ing to food scientists with the
University of Georgia Ex
tension Service. For that
reason, thawing the meat at
room temperature is not a
wise practice. The food sci
entists say ground beef
should be thawed in the re
frigerator.
A goal of 90 pints has been
set, according to volunteers
of the Red Cross Auxiliary,
who will be serving refresh
ments.
A.R.R.T., and Mary Eliza
