Before...and after. The Gumming Shrine Club recently rebuilt this 1982 Cadillac ambulance
into a parade truck for their clown unit, the Cumming Kommedians. “It had a bad case of
rust rash," said shriner C.B. McWilliams. The rust was cured by a liberal application of fir
reglas and aluminum cans. The shriners also reconfigured the back to bold the Kommedi
ans’ motorbikes. The ambulance was repainted a quiet, conservative fire truck red and
canary yellow. Since this picture was made, signs have been painted on the side and more
chrome has been added. The old ambulance has already been in several parades.
Hearing Set On Slide Plan
A hearing on the contro
versial alpine slide proposed
for Sawnee Mountain has
been scheduled for Thursday
at 1:30 p.m. in Forsyth
County Superior Court.
Architect James E. Bar
ker, who owns 264 acres on
the mountain, applied to
have part of the land re
zoned for an alpine slide in
late 1978-
In March, 1980, after the
the Forsyth County Board of
Commissioners refused to is
sue a building permit, Bar
ker sued. Barker said he
sued because the permit was
refused after what he called
11 years of planning and “co
operation with the county.”
The alpine slide has been
opposed by The Committee
for the Preservation of For
syth County. “We don’t want
the mountain defaced,” said
committee official Harry J.
Dell in July. “We are not
looking for any publicity, but
we don’t want the beauty of
the area destroyed.”
Since he bought his land in
1964, it has been used as a
trash dump, a lovers’ lane, a
drug exchange center, a mo
torcycle race track and for
other unsavory activities,
Barker said in July.
“I knew if I could build
some kind of enjoyable rec
reation on the mountain,
then it would clear up the
problems that are up there
now. It would also help beau
tify the mountain,” Barker
said.
Although at one time,
plans for the mountain in
cluded the alpine slide, a
slide lift to the top of the
mountain, shopping and
parking, an art village, a
club house and a park, the
plans have been trimmed
down to just the slide and
tram to the top.
The alpine slide, imported

from Germany, is a sort of
controlled bobsled on a
track. The top speed is 25
miles per hour. The alpine
slide would be about .75
miles long and would last
about five minutes.
The slide would be painted
and landscaped to blend in
with the mountain and would
not be completely visible
from nearby highways.
The slide would end near
the foot of the mountain by a
lake. Another lake with foun
tains would be built nearby.

the slide would have to draw
an estimated 1,250 cars on
week ends each month, Mc-
Caskill continued.
Should the alpine slide be
abandoned, the mountain
would have a useless slide
stuck on it, McCaskill said.
The additional traffic and
noise from the slide would
require more policemen,
which would cut into officers
available to patrol else
where, McCaskill said.
Taxes might possibly be
raised to hire more officers
to handle the extra traffic,
he said.
The alpine slide would also
deface the mountain, Mc-
Caskill said.

Two seats will be filled here.
Like District Three, there
