An old scare crow surrounded by a lot of harvest time items
was enough to merit Judy and Renee’s “Suprise Patch” of
oils-and crafts first place in the best all around category of
the Falling Leaves Festival held here Saturday. In the bot
tom photo, Debra Gallard shows off her bonnet and dress
that won her third place in the best country dress category.

Democrats Elect
New Officers
The Forsyth County Dem
ocratic Party met Sept. 17 to
elect new officers and take a
position on political matters.
Meeting in four separate
caucuses, the Democrats
chose nine committeemen
for four-year terms, plus two
new committeemen two al
low for an increase in the
number of registered voters.
Party bylaws specify how
many voters each commit
teeman may represent.
New party officers are:
Chairperson, Horace
Trammel.
—First vice-chairperson,
Virginia Clements.
Second vice-chairper
son, Lloyd Wright.
Secretary, J. Lanier
Bannister.
The Democrats voted to
support the nominees of the
Democratic Party in the No
Business
From The Front
said.
The board bought the recorders to
cut down on long lines at the polls dur
ing the November general election.
In other business, the board:
—Appointed Harrington to check
three proposals from insurance firms
to carry the county insurance policies.
Accepted a grant of $14,849 from
the Georgia Mountains Area Planning
and Development Commission to reno
vate the Bethelview Community Center
as a senior citizens’ center. The county
will put up $1,650, or 10 percent of the
cost.
Decided to establish priorities for
state assistance in road and bridge re
pairs by Nov. 1.
Directed the Forsyth-Cumming
Planning Board to review a quirk in the
zoning law which permits developers to
build roads in subdivisions which are
not up to specifications and never turn
them over to the county for mainte
nance. Property owners sign a letter to
this effect when they buy their land,
but still will be angry when their road
is not maintained, chairman Barnett
said.
Authorized improvements to
F.A.A. Road and Holtzclaw Subdivision
Road by private builders.
Accepted Six Mile Drive into the
county road system.
Authorized the Gainesville/Hall
County Joint Resourse Recovery De
velopment Authority to investigate
eliminating sanitary landfills in seve
ral counties and burning trash instead
to produce electrical power.
vember general election.
The Democrats also sent a
letter to the Forsyth County
Board of Commissioners
asking them to choose an of
ficial map of election dis
tricts. In his letter,
Bannister said such a map
would ensure both major
parties would then be using
the same map and would
avoid possible litigation.
Republican school board
candidate Ron Wood lives in
what the most recent state
road map shows as the Cum
ming district. Wood is run
ning from the adjacent fifth
district, though. Earlier
maps dating back to the
1920 s show Wood is living in
the fifth district.
No known legal descrip
tion of the boundaries be
tween the election districts
exists.
