Rickey Densomore
Is Merit Semifinalist
Rickey Densmore, a se
nior at Forsyth County High
School, was recently named
a semifinalist in the compe
tition for National Merit
Scholarships to be awarded
in April of 1981.
Rickey was one of 15,000
semifinalists chosen from
across the country by the
National Merit Scholarship
Corporation of Evanston, 111.
His selection places him in
the top half of one percent of
Georgia’s high school senior
class.
The son of Lamar and
Betty Densmore of Cum
ming, Rickey’s post-gradua
tion plans are to attend
Georgia Tech in Atlanta and
study computer science.
Two other seniors at the
high school have received
letters of commendation for
their participation in the
merit program. Robert Gan
dara and Leigha Sipes
ranked below the required
level to be national merit
semifinalist, but are still in
the top five percent of merit
program participants.

Sponsors Play
The “Atlanta Plays for
Living” will present a pro
gram at 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
Nov. 13 at Otwell Middle
School auditorium.
The program, sponsored
jy the Forsyth County High
School FHA chapter, will be
under the direction of Char
ee Lambert.
Ms. Lambert has been di
recting the group for six
years. Her education is in
theatre and she has been
trained in counseling.
The play will be on “Di
vide and Multiply”, written
>y Joan Bell Thome.
And open discussion will
>e held after the play.
The public was invited to
attend.

entered the 1981 Merit Pro
gram by taking the
PSAT/NMSQT in 1979, when
most participants were ju
niors.
Over 90 percent of the 15,-
000 semifinalists are ex
pected to advance to finalist
standing by meeting further
requirements— which in
clude being fully endorsed
and recommended for schol
arships by their secondary
school principals, submit
ting records that confirm
high academic standing and
substantiating their high
qualifying test scores with
equivalent scores on another
examination.
Rickey will be notified in
February of 1981 if he is a fi
nalist. The 14,000 finalists
will compete for about 4,500
merit scholarships to be
awarded and announced
next spring.
At least 1,000 of the
awards in 1981 will be nonre
newable National Merit sl,-
000 scholarships for which
every finalist will be consid
ered. The one-time “Na
tional” awards are allocated
on a state representational
basis in proportion to the
state’s numbW of graduat
ing seniors.
A selection committee of
experienced college admis
sions officers and secondary
school counselors will con
vene next January to choose
the winners.
The selection process is a
subjective one in which each
finalist’s academic record,
self-description, achieve
ment outside the classroom,
two sets of aptitude test
scores, and the high school
principal’s recommendation
are evaluated.
Winners of National Merit
SI,OOO scholarships rep
resent the finalists in each
state who are judged by the
committee to best combine
abilities and personal qual
ities needed for success dur
ing and after college.
Approximately 3,500 schol
arships, most of which are
worth between SI,OOO and
SB,OOO over four years of un
dergraduate study, will be
awarded in 1981. Of these, 1,-
550 will be financed by more
than 400 corporations, com
pany foundations, and busi
ness organizations that
designate the four-year
merit scholarships they sup
port for children of company
employees, for finalists from
particular geographic areas,
or for those planning careers
a sponsor wishes to encour
age.
Vets Going Aboard
May Get Benefits
Veterans planning to live
or work abroad or taking a
vacation overseas should in
clude in their preparations a
visit to the nearest Veterans
Administration office before
departing.
VA says veterans ought to
know before leaving what
benefits are or are not avail
able to them in foreign coun
tries.
Veterans with service con
nnected disabilities, for in
stance, should obtain a
statement of the disabilities
from the office that main
tains their medical records.
The statement will enable
the veteran to obtain emer
gency treatment or hospital
zation paid for by VA
vhen proper application for
medical benefits and the
statement are presented to
the United States Embassy
or consular office in a for
eign country.
Application should be
made within 72 hours of
need, VA said.

Hospital in Manila is the
only overseas hospital where

VA-paid care is available to
veterans with non-service
connected disabilities.
Veterans may be admitted
to the Manila hospital only
on a space available basis
and then only if they cannot
afford other hospitalization.
The VA reminded veter
ans that only those who are
retired from military serv
ice are eligible for medical
benefits at overseas military
hospitals and clinics.

Cumming Recreation and
Parks Department is offer
ing slimnastics classes to
help stay in shape.
The classes will be held on
