Appointed
April Reid, Miss Georgia*
USA, will be Christmas Seal
Ambassador for the Georgia
Lung Association’s 1980
Christmas Seal Campaign.
Her appointment was an
nounced by James K. Van
Buren, M.D., president of
the Georgia Lung Associa
tion, the oldest voluntary
health organization fighting
a specific disease. Ms. Reid
works in the sales depart
ment of Channel 12 in Au
gusta. The native Georgian
was Miss Georgia Holiday in
1978.
Johnson
Receives
Honor
DAHLONEGA - Dora
Johnson of Cumming has
been awarded a graduate
assistantship is special edu
cation at North Georgia
Collge. She is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ken
nedy of Suwanee and wife
of L.S. Johnson.
According to Dr. Jewel M.
Wade, director of special ed
ucation, the assistantships
are awarded to graduate
students who demonstrate
high scholoastic achieve
ment and show promise of
making outstanding contri
butions in the education of
handicapped children.
The assistantships are
made possible through a
grant from the U.S. Depart
ment of Education, office of
special education.
Mrs. Johnson, a graduate
of Reinhardt Junior College
and Oglethorpe University,
is pursuing a master’s de
gree in special education.

Program
Planned
Two specialists in family
counseling will lead commu
nity discussion groups in a
North Georgia College
continuing education pro
gram oh the status of the
American family on Thurs
days, Oct. 2 and 9.
Titled “The Family: In
Change or in Crisis?”, the
program will focus on socie
tal influences on the family,
particularly communication
among family members and
the changing role of women.
The two sessions will be
gin p.m. at the Lump
kin County High School
library in Oahlonega.
Dr. Charles V. Bancroft,
practicing marriage and
family counselor in Gaines
ville, will speak on Oct. 2. He
will discuss recent devel
opments in the American
family, considering chang
ing roles and the vantage
points of individual family
members.
On Oct. 9 Dr. Virginia
Boyle, also a practicing fam
ily counselor, will discuas
the effects of the changing
role of the American woman
on the family.
She will concentrate on the
emergence of women as
equals as a result of the
rights movement, the single
parent family, and changing
role models.

The latest amount paid out
pushes the total for the year
to $145,341,148. At'this same
time last year, state labor
had paid out $98,422,300 in
jobless benefits. And for all
of 1979, state labor paid out
$139.9 million.
