Amendment 3 Pushed The Georgia Association of Educators has called on the voters of Georgia to sup port Constitutional Amend ment No. Three (3) on the Nov. 4 ballot to assure the students and parents of this state that qualified educa tors will remain in the teach ing profession. Amendment No. 3 will set .up a program to reimburse educators for required courses they must take in or der to remain certified to teach. The State Depart ment of Education presently requires educators to take ten (10) quarter hours over a period of three years to re tain certification. According to GAE Exec utive Secretary and State Senator Horace E. Tate, au thor of the amendment, “Georgia teachers are subsi dizing the universities of this state in excess of $3 million from their own pockets each year to retain certification. This amendment would have the state providing that service for only $2.5 mil lion.” “This amendment would require participating educa tors to remain in the profes sion in Georgia at least one year following the year in which the courses are taken.” In 1980, some 6,000 veteran educators left the profession for reasons other than re tirement. The Georgia Asso ciation of Educators feels passage of this amendment would entice many of those educators to remain in the classroom. GAE President Roger Sharrock said, “Everyone agrees that school teachers are underpaid. Requireing them to. pay for additional course work is an added ex pense many simply cannot afford, especially when JSra could win ■ the next time you have aCokeandasmile.
