The Image Of God
Deer Creek Shores
Presbyterian Church
In Christianity, the image
of God may be described in
four statements: 1. The true
living God is a self-revealing
God, in order to cure man
from doubts and unbeliefs. 2.
The true living God is a per
sonal God, in order for man
to meet him at anytime and
without any arrangements.
3. The true living God is a
loving God. No evil is caused
by him. 4. The true living
God is a God who takes the
initiative to bring man to a
fellowship with him. He is
the one who provides the op
portunity, the invitation, the
conviction, but not the deci
sion. He causes the reasons
why you should decide; but
the decision is yours.
In spite of this clear and
Biblical description of God,
man has the tendency of
making a different image of
him. And instead of us being
made in the image of God,
we try to make God in our
image and the result is that
we cannot worship another
man “whose thoughts are
like our thoughts, and whose
ways are like our ways”.
The Bible assures us over
and over again that God is
not like man.
It is not his pleasure that\
he is after. He is after our
happiness and pleasure. He
knows that our happiness is
in seeking and growing in
him. Therefore, he demands
it, not to increase his glory
but to bring us to his glory,
not to enjoy our fellowship

but to help us enjoy his.
God invites man to re
spond to him while he is
near. “Seek ye the Lord
while he may be found. Call
ye upon him while he is
near. “Seek ye the Lord
while he may be found. Call
ye upon him while he is
near.”
The invitation has three
characteristics: 1. It is the
greatest of all life’s invita
tions. God from the begin
ning searches for man and
invites him to eternal life.
Isaiah 55:1 says, “everyone
that thirsts, come ye to the
waters...”. To Noah he said,
“come...into the ark”.
Christ himself said, “Come
unto me, all ye that labor
and are heavy laden...”. 2. It
is in our capacity to fulfill it.
“Seek ye the Lord while he
may be found.” 3. It is a lim
ited invitation. “Seek ye the
Lord while he may be found,
call upon him while he is
near.” There will be times
whne God will not be as near
to you as he is today. God is
not near when we claim to
be busy, are with the wrong
kind of company, involved in
the wrong kind of actions,
when we are old, when our
life is over without repen
tance.
Our response: “Let the
wicked forsake his way, and
the unrighteous man his
thoughts, and let him return
unto the Lord and he will
have mercy upon him, and
to our God, for he will abun
dantly forgive.”
Come Tuesday night to
learn more about these is
sues facing our family and
country in the next few
years.

Don’t Shut Hatch
On Outside World
In Jesus’ Sermon on the
Mount, He tells us to be
seen, “you are the light of
the world,” and to be of
some Christian influence,
“you are the salt of the
earth, if it loses its saltiness
it should be thrown away.” I
found an interesting parable
that may describe a lot of
churches as well as individ
ual Christians who know
what they ought to be and to
do, but don’t.
Once upon a time there
was a church that by some
strange happening became a
submarine. It shut the hatch
on the outside world and sub
merged into its own sea. One
day the captain looked
through the periscope to the
outside world and saw a real
need to leave the deep sea.

But when they tried, the
crew got the “bends” and
the sub stayed down.
While they were down,
they stayed busy. They tin
kered with the machinery,
overhauled the kitchen, took
care of the ammunition, but
never used it. The salaries
were paid to the officers and
they all prayed that no depth
charge would disturb their
isolation. The air was get
ting stale, but they were
willing to endure it rather
than go up; some commit
tees even decided that the
stale air was good for them.
The last entry in the cap
tain’s log book read, “Have
probably set a new record
for being submerged and
maintaining a predeter
mined course. We see no

reason why we should
change directions. The crew
continues to work hard. We
did sight an enemy and then
we appointed three commit
tee members to study the sit
uation.”
Is this a sad parable de
scribing our ineffectiveness,
our lack of concern? If we as
Christians are content sim
ply to shut ourselves up in
our own little world, God
have mercy on us.

Sometimes we don’t like to
remember that we have in
fluence for which we are ac
countable. Romans 14:7 tells
us “for none of us lives to
himself, and no one dies to
himself.” There are at least
two kinds of influence.
Conscious influence is the
kind Andrew brought to bear
on Peter when he led him to
Jesus. You are aware when
you choose to use this power
on others. You can control it
at all times. But this isn’t the
greatest portion of your in
fluence.
Unconscious influence is
the kind Peter had on John
at the open tomb. John
paused on the outside, Peter
rushed on in. He saw, he re
joiced, and he believed.
Without a word or gesture he
influenced John to come in
and the scripture says “then
went in also that other dis
ciple, which came first to the
tomb, and he saw and be
lieved” (John 20:8). Per
haps, for every one person
you influence consciously,
you influence 10 others
unconsciously. Your enter
ing salvation today would in
fluence others of whom you
will have no knowledge until
the judgement. But your
staying on the outside makes
others feel Comfortable in
their unsaved condition.
Men have always tried to
avoid the fact that they are
responsible for others. When
asked about his own brother
whom he had slain, Cain
shrugged his shoulders and
said to God, “Am I my

is to you!!!

brother’s keeper?” The an
swer comes across the ages,
“Yes, you are your brother’s
keeper.”
The voice of influence may
be that of a little child in
your home speaking of Je
sus. the Bible or the church.
You do count, you do make
a difference. Will it be for
the right and that which is
good, or for that which tears
down and hurts?
