I know it is a month away
from Christmas, but the fact
.is our preparations for it
seem to start earlier every
year. But here is something
you can use all year round
proper packaging.
. Both the post office and
parcel services have some
Ipecific guidelines they ex
pect you to meet, so it is a
good idea to learn what they
are before you package
Something for mailing.

tells you not to send some
thing in a paper bag or to

teose around inside the box.
H Boxing Techniques
; v : Here are some details
fbout boxing up Christmas
presents. Most shipping
damages occur because you
didn’t protect the cargo well
enough. All the stacking,
moving and possibly tossing
that these boxes must en
sure before they reach their
destinations make it nec
essary for you to pack every
thing securely. Create a
jsishion effect in the box by
Stuffing crumpled brown
bags or newspapers around
every item and between the
items and the outside of the
pox.
Make sure the contents
j|on’t move easily in the box.
Remember, the further you
keep fragile articles away
pom the comers and sides
bf the carton, the better
phance they have of escap
lg damage.
-Now you have the inside
properly secure, close the
package carefully. Many
shippers prefer that you not
use string, masking tape or
cellophane tape. That leaves
reinforced tape or Water-ac
tivated tape. Check at a
hardware, variety or dis
count store for wrapping
tape at least two inches
wide.
To be sure your package
gets delivered to the proper
address the label must be

correct. Always use the Zip
code with the street address.
For rural route numbers,
add the telephone number if
you have it. Put the address
label on the top of the car
ton, and never over a seam
or sealing tape. Remove or
cross out any old addresses
on the box and always in
clude your complete return
address on the box. For
added protection, put a du
plicate label inside the car
ton. This will allow the post
office’s dead letter branch to
still deliver the package if
something should happen to
the outside wrapper.
Avoid disappointing a
loved one at a very special
time. Take a moment now
and do some very important
important planning. This
will make it possible for
your package to arrive in
time for that exciting holi
day, birthday, or anniver
sary.
Usually, we wait so late to
start a handmade gift, which
means we must hurry to fin
ish, or we buy it at the last
minute, which only com
pounds the problem. This
means that it delays wrap
ping and mailing the pack
age.
By doing things like this
now, you will be able to
breathe a little easier later.
Take my word for it. I just
sent a package north and
I’m already feeling relieved
from having done it in ad
vance. Don’t worry about
having nothing to do later. I
guarantee you there will de
finately be other things to do
in the time you saved by
mailing early. So, I’m sorry,
but you will have to forget it
if you thought you would
have “extra” time.
Remember to ensure
packages with the post office
or parcel service if they are
unusually valuable. Please
call the local U.S. Post Of
fice if you want specific in
formation about the
recommended mailing dates
to ensure packages arrive
before Christmas or other
holidays.

Reminder
For Brides
Information about en
gagements and weddings for
The Forsyth County News
should be typed or neatly
printed. A name and phone
number should be attached
should there be need to con
tact you for any reason.
In the case of wedding sto
ries, The News cannot use
stories six weeks old or
older. The information and a
picture should be submitted
as soon after the wedding
date as possible.
The News will run a story
and a picture for any wed
ding that has taken place
within four weeks of the
News’ publication date. Af
ter the four-week period,
only a picture and cutline
can be used. After six weeks,
the story will be too old for
publication.
The News prefers that
photos be Mack and white
because they generally print
better than color photos.
Color pictures can be used,
but they should be of a good
quality. (The subjects
should not be too far from
the camera. They should be
in focus with no shadows on
their faces.)
If there are any questions,
contact The News office.
