Moles Can Be A Pest;
But You Can Beat ’Um
"How can I get rid of
moles?”
That’s a question that
comes up every year about
the time flowers bloom.
Moles are easy to control if
you go about it right.
Moles are very unlike
mice, which they superfi
cially resemble. Mice breed
repeatedly throughout the
year. They have four to
seven young in a litter.
Moles are almost infertile
by comparison. They breed
once a year and have three
to four young.
Mice eat mostly vegetable
matter. Moles eat mainly
insects and other tiny ani
mals.
Mice can see and are
highly mobile above ground.
Moles have tiny eyes cov
ered by skin and can only
distinguish between light
and dark. So moles are con
fined to their underground
burrows. In short, the mole
is an easily defeated adver
sary.
The mole spends much

Diplomas Ready
Before the approximately 300 students in the Forsyth County
High School class of 1981 were allowed to graduate last week,
diplomas had to be readied. The person awarded the task of
placing 305 diplomas in covers was Wanda Bruce, senior
class sponsor. She apparently finished in time because no one
was without a document at the end of Friday night’s com
mencement. (News staff photo by Lane Gardner Camp)

time in his deep burrow sys
tem a foot or more under
ground. There are one or
more little “rooms” where
he builds nests. When the
mole is hungry, he moves
through his tunnels to the the
upper few inches of soil.
There he travels his shallow
burrow system to a produc
tive feeding area and begins
to plow new ground.
Moles literally swim
through soft earth with their
powerful hand-like front feet
that are equipped with long,
flattened toenails. As the
mole tunnels along just be
low the surface, his pointed
nose is sniffing among the
grass roots. He finds an
earthworm here, a mole
cricket there, and perhaps a
juicy Japanese bettle grub
for dessert.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mole is
raising up a long mean
dering “mole hill” in your
lawn. If he was off in the
woods somewhere, you

thought, but he is in your
backyard and you’re angry
at him.
If you can’t bear the
thought of killing the mole,
try starving him out. To do
this ask your county agent
how to control soil insects in
your turf. This method may
have slow and uncertain re
sults.
Should you prefer a direct
approach, try this. Check
your yard for mole runways.
Press down all the runways
at intervals of several feet.
Place a bottle cap or other
marker at those exact spots.
The next day check these
locations. If the mole has nol
passed through and the mole
hill is still flat, pick up your
marker. If the mole has
raised the hill up again, put a
second marker.
After four or five days, you
will known which runways
the mole uses every day.
This is the key to where to
put the trap. Then take a
harpoon type mole trap and
set it in place over the flat

Raise and lower the
prongs of the trap until they

the trap legs straddle the

the trap is ready for the first

Should you find the trap

trap and part the sod to see if
you were successful. If the

try another spot. Repeat the
process till the mole hills do

Landowner Tax Tips
With the new reforestation
tax incentives joining the
ranks of forestry opportuni
ties demanding paperwork,
forest landowners need to
keep accurate records.
Lamar Merck and Bill
Murray, Georgia Extension
Service foresters, say that
records need to be a year
’round job. Don’t rely on
guesswork at tax time next
spring, they advise.
“Capital gains and tax de
ductions point up the value of
record keeping to the timber
owner. Bookkeeping needn’t
be complicated. All that’s
needed is an orderly list of of
original costs and expendi
tures as they are made,
backed up by appropriate
receipts. This can include
timber costs, site prepara
tion and tree planting, con
sulting fees, timber sales
and up-to-date volume,”
says Merck.
Timber landowners are
still learning about the refo
restation tax incentives law
passed in October. The refo
restation incentive is a 10
percent investment tax
credit plus a seven year am
ortization on the first SIO,OOO
of capitalized reforestation
expenditures each year.
To take advantage of the
new law, Merck and Murray
advise landowners to plan
winter plantings now and
prepare the planting site
during the summer.
This legislation makes re
forestation expenses eligi
ble, within limits, for the
same treatment as invest
ments in other kinds of pro
ductive assets, like buying a
new tractor for a farm or
some new equipment for a
small business, says Mur
ray.
These new incentives
should help ease the shortfall
iTfi
in timber production in the
next several decades, say
the foresters.
“Before this new law, di
rect costs of reforestation
were treated as capital ex
penditures. They could be
recovered as a depletion de
duction only after the timber
was cut. Under the new law,
landowners can recover
these costs early and they
can get investment credit.
This should make reforesta
tion investments much more
attractive to small and me-
