The Georgia Sheriffs’ As

Busbee to include dog fight
ing as a subject of debate in
the upcoming special session
of the General Assembly.
A letter to the governor
from Russell Tanner, presi

stated present laws are to

with “this sadistic and inhu
mane treatment of ani
mals.”
Bud Cody, executive direc

onlv a misdemeanor to par

state of Georgia. It is our
intention to push for strong
felony convictions to insure
that this so-called sport’ will
be stopped in this state at the
earliest possible date.”
Cody went on to say, “Our
concern in this matter is not

COOKING MEAT
Extension Service home
economists say there is good
reason for the recommenda
tion to cook meat or poultry
products at low to moderate
temperatures. This method
not only provides maximum
tenderness and juciness; it
also results in less shrink
age. And it makes sure the
center of the product is fully
cooked without the outside
being “burned to a crisp.”

Study Recommends
10,000 Dawson Acres
Some 10,000 acres in Daw
son County on Amicalola
Creek and the Etowah River
have been recommended for
purchase by an Army Corps
of Engineers study.
The land is part of 21,000
acres that may be bought in
Georgia and South Carolina
to compensate for fish and
wildlife habitat that will be
flooded when the lake behind
the Richard B. Russell Dam
on the Savannah River is
filled in 1965. Russell Dam is
located between Hartwell
and Clark Hill dams.
If the government buys the
land, the corps says it will be
leased back to the state for
intensive wildlife manage
ment.
The Corps recommended
the land be bought as part of
a complete plan to compen
sate for 26,650 acres which
will be flooded by the new
lake. The Corps’ Board of
Engineers for Rivers and
Harbors must pass on the
project next. After that, the
project must work its way
through the various layers of
officialdom until Congress
finally approves or disap
proves it. The estimated cost
is about S2O million.
