IRS To Hold
Tax Courses
The close of the school
year is upon us. Michael
Murphy, District Director of
Internal Revenue Service in
Georgia tells parents and
teachers of two courses of
fered by IRS called “Under
standing Taxes”, for high
schools, and “Fundamentals
of Tax Preparation”, for col
leges and vocational tech
nical levels of education.
Murphy said that as plan
ning occurs for next year’s
courses, one should keep in
mind that finances are most
likely one of the most impor
tant influences on our lives
and the lives of our children.
Every taxpayer and poten
tial taxpayer has the right as
well as the responsibility to
understand the laws govern
ing taxes. The two courses
available can provide a
background of tax history,
give an insight into tax law
and can be tailored to fit the
needs of and individual
class. He said the high school
class requires 12 to 16 hours
of classroom training. “Fun
damentals of Tax Prepara
tion” requires 45 to 60 hours

of classroom teaching. An
additional attraction of these
courses is the cost, they are
both free.
“Understanding Taxes" is
excellent material to include
in the tax unit of the personal
finance course taught in high
schools, according to the di
rector. He stated that not
only will “Understanding
Taxes” provide a student
practical education, it can
also be used to teach the
student to be a volunteer in
preparing tax returns for
persons of lower income, the
elderly, and fellow students.
Many schools and colleges
around the state participate
in the annual volunteer in
come tax assistance (VITA)
program, which is conducted
by local community action
volunteers. VITA allows the
students to utilize their new
skill in tax prepartion and
offers the school coordinator
the opportunity to organize,
