The Forsyth County Board of Education recently honored
two school bus drivers who retired effective the end of the
1680-81 school year last week. They are Herbert Castleberry,
second from left, and James Garner, second from right.
Castleberry drove a bus for the school system for 44 years.

Last Drive
65-year-old Herbert Castleberry, Forsyth County’s most
experienced bus driver, drove his last load of Forsyth County
school children Friday, May 29. That day completed 44 years
of piloting a school bus to and from Chestatee Elementary,
Otwell Middle and Forsyth County High School. Castleberry
is the last county driver to actually own his bus. He plans to
hang onto “old number six’’ and use it to transport people to
and from his church, Harmony Grove Baptist. Castleberry
was 21-years-old when he first started driving a bus. Through
the years, he’s hauled three generations of school children
and watched the county’s roads go from dirt to paved.

Retiring After 37 Years
James Garner, who will be 65-years-old in July, is retiring
after 37 years of driving a Forsyth County school bus. For
most of those years, it was bus number 14 that he maneu
vered up and down the county’s roads. He served Gumming
and Mashburn Elementary Schools, Otwell Middle School
and Forsyth County High School. Garner says he’s bussed
two generations of school children on a career total of five
buses. He says he’s always enjoyed seeing the school chil
dren climb aboard each morning. On his retirement, Garner
says he would especially like to thank all the school superin
tendents and board members for their cooperation through
the years.

Four From Here Are
Olympic Participants
Forsyth County was rep
resented by four “special”
athletes at the 1981 Georgia
Special Olympics, held May
22-24 in Warner Robins.
Four local youths joined
some 1,200 mentally re
tarded and physically hand
icapped athletes from
around the state in competi
tion for medals and ribbons.
There were a number of
athletic events, but Forsyth
County’s representatives, all
students from the educable
mentally handicapped class
at Cumming Elementary,
only competed in the 50-yard
dash and the softball throw.
Joey Swafford earned two
gold medals at the games
while Jerry Bamee won a
silver medal and a fourth
place. Randall Clark got a
bronze medal and a fourth
place. And Steve Smith won
two silver medals.
Accompanying the special
olympians to the state
games were Madeline Cox
and Barbara Bagley, special
education teachers at Cum
ming Elementary; Dennis
Whittle, vice-principal at
Sawnee Elementary; and
Brenda Swafford, a parent of
one of the athletes.
Every participant re
ceived some kind of medal or
ribbon for each event, but
according to Ms. Cox, “It’s
not built up what place you
made.lt’s that you did it.”
The Special Olympics
oath, in fact, is “Let me win;
but if I cannot win, let me be
brave in the attempt.”
Commenting on the way
Warner Robins hosted the
event, Whittle said, “The
town really turned out.”
Ms. Cox said there were
banners all over the town
that welcomed the special
olympians. “They did all
kinds of nice things for the
kids,” she added.
Other activities enjoyed by
the athletes, said Ms. Cox,
were swimming, listening to
