Response To Word
DEER CREEK SHORES
Presbyterian Church
What shapes people and
their style? What makes
them the way they are? The
answer to this question is
summarized in three points:
1-Environment, 2-Experi
ence, 3-Beliefs. In most
cases, environment shapes
the look of the person and his
manners. Experience
shapes his attitudes about
things, moods, and abilities.
Beliefs shape his goals, prio
rities, style, and his concept
of himself.
Which of the three do you
think is the most important?
Beliefs, of course, because
they have the power to cor
rect what the other two
might have damaged. Yet, it
is sad that most people do
not possess the right kind of
beliefs and, therefore, every
thing they say or do may be
harmful, not only to them
selves but to others around
them.
All aspects of life are con
trolled by beliefs. They are
the only thing that make the
person, for the whole system
of life is influenced by them.
The mind and what is ac
cepted by it controls the per
son as a whole and probably
the universe that he lives in.
From this, we come to the
conclusion that a person is
what he believes and what he
meditates on. This means
that what a person believes
and meditates upon is what
determines his personality,
his career, his style of living,
and his destiny. This is why
the Psalmist says in Psalms
1:1, 2, "Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel
of the wicked, nor stands in
the way of sinners, nor sits in
the seat of scoffers: but his
delight is in the law of the
Lord, and on his law he med
itates day and night.”
What is our response to
God’s Word? Our response to
God's Word is to meditate on
it. Meditation, according to
Christianity, is not control
ling things by the mind, it is

The “average” U.S.

controlling the mind by
things from above. It is not
uniting our spirit with other
spirits like in some cults. It
is seeking the Sprit of God to
speak to us. It is not living a
fantasy that does not exist on
earth. It is experiencing a
reality that is made avail
able to us through Christ.
To meditate on God’s
Word is a dynamic source
for a better life on earth and
happy eternity. What does
the Word of God do to us?
Psalms 19 tells us that it
revives the soul, it makes
wise the simple, it rejoices
the heart, it enlightens the
eyes, it protects from sin
ning against God, it is light
to our feet, it is honey to our
mouth, it is gold to our trea
surers, etc.
“In his law (Word), he
meditates day and night.”
To meditate upon any theme
is to have one’s thoughts
come back to it sponta
neously, gladly, and without
apology. In meditation on
God’s Word, we are bound to
find moral and spiritual
strength.
There are three aspects of
meditation: 1-All meditation
is thinking, but all thinking is
not meditation. An intellec
tual thought is not enough.
The state of the heart plays a
great role in meditation.
2- is the start
ing point; it is not an end in
itself Whatever we need to
see, to know, to be, begins in
meditation on God’s Word.
In this life a person sees only
the point of time, but through
meditation he should be able
to see the infinite, the eter
nal. In meditation we are
able to experience God’s
presence.
3- on God’s
Word carries the purifying
and repairing forces of the
Word through the whole per
son.
“Let the words of my
mouth and the meditation of
my heart be acceptable in
thy sight, 0 Lord, my God
and my Redeemer.” Psalms

well you’re received. Tact

The book of Proverbs in
the Old Testament is a good
one to read and note how
much is said about govern
ing the tongue and wise
speech. So much hurt could
be avoided if the attitude
behind our tongues were in
tune with Christ. Sure, some
times we have to speak the
truth and it will hurt. Some
situations demand it. But our
spirit and attitude behind the
words must be of the Lord.
Our Lord walked this
earth, lived as we do, knew
our hardships and sufferings
and earned the right to speak
to us. Before we come down
so hard on someone merely
because we disagree with
their ideas, methods, etc.,
let’s try to give them the
benefit of time and consider
ation that we would want
were we in their situation.
We aren’t always con
scious of the pressures on
others, but we like for others
to consider ours as they
make demands on us.
Let’s play fairly.

In the sermon on the
Mount, Jesus tells them that
as Christians, we are the
“salt of the earth" and “the
light of the world.” It seems
He is telling us that we
should live in such a way
that would have a good influ
ence on those around us. He
goes further to say that by
letting our lights shine, peo
ple will see it, and they will
give the glory to God. It’s a
big task and it’s certainly not
easy considering all the
obstacles to one’s faith, the
constant peer pressure, and
temptation. The Apostle
Paul tells us in Rom. 1:16 not
to be ashamed of the Gospel
