June Is The Month
For Fleas And Ticks
BETTY McDOWALL
Humane Society
“Tis June the Month of
Roses” Words of a song
that come to me out of my
past at graduation time.
June is also a month of f leas,
ticks, chiggers, and other
creepy, crawly things. We’d
rather not have them infest
ing our animals. But what do
we do to prevent it? First
thing that comes to mind is
the flea collar. It’s fine for
some animals, others react
to it with rashes, etc. We
must be careful not to have it
too tight, nor too loose. Cats
have been known to rebel
against having them around
their necks and in trying to
get them off, have gotten
them in their mouths and
choked to death. If a flea
collar is not your choice,
veterinarians now have pills
that, when given every few
weeks, will give protection.

Sevin, used in the garden,
can also ward off the little
buggers. Place some of the
powder in the toe of a nylon
stocking and dust it over
your pet, avoiding the eyes.
In extreme cases, dipping
your dog is necessary.
Bathing dogs in the sum
mer is a good idea. Cats are
a horse of another color.
However, if started with a
bath at an early age, cats
too, can be bathed. Using a
large bath towel to protect
yourself against the claws
while bathing them.
Patter pitter from here
and there: Ogden Nash said,
“A door is what a dog is
perpetually on the wrong
side of.” The Book of Lists
says the maximum recorded
life span recorded of a cat is
34 years 8 months, and of a
dog is 27 years and 3 months,
probably the cat lived longer
because it had 8 extra lives

thrown in. The book also
states that the gestation pe
riod (length of time of preg
nancy) of an African
elephant is 640 days; dogs
and cats take 64 days while
the li’l ole possum turns
them loose in just 13 days.
Have you hugged your pet
today. Come to think of it, if
your pet is a goldfish, forget
the hugging, maybe you’d
better just throw it a kiss.

First Fly
When the American flag was hoisted over the Forsyth
County High School stadium during the school’s recent
graduation ceremony, it was the first time a flag had ever
flown over the stadium since it was constructed several
years ago. As the flag went up the pole, the Flash of Crimson
played the Star Spangled Banner. 1981 graduates are pic
