CHRISTY HEIGHTON
...attends meet
Girl Scout
Exec Is At
Seminar
Christy Heighton, exec
utive director of Northeast
Georgia Girl Scout Council,
which serves the North
Georgia area, is attending a
12-day seminar in corporate
management designed for
chief executive officers of
Girl Scout councils in Wake
field, Mass.
The seminar is the third in
a series sponsored by Girl
Scouts of the U.S.A. and con
ducted by management ex
perts from Harvard
University. The team is
headed by Dr. Regina Herz
linger, professor of business
administration and co-au
thor of Management Control
of Non-profit Organizations.
In addition to executive
directors of 62 Girl Scout
councils, Mrs. Heighton will
join 19 members of the na
tional Girl Scout staff from
various areas within the or
ganization, and nine poten
tial candidates for exective
directors’ jobs who will par
ticipate as part of Girl
Scouts of the U.S.A. “pipe
line project.”
The training is designed to
provide knowledge of the
most recent developments in
such areas as finance, mar
keting, personnel and pro
duction management,
organizational and interper
sonal behavior, and policies
and tactics. All participants
will engage in activities
which stimulate the devel
opment of additional man
agement skills and
techniques.
Most Girl Scout chief exec
utive officers are women,
many of whom have had
years of practical experi
ence. In many ways, their
tasks are more difficult than
those of counterparts in pri
vate industry. Chief exec
utive officers of Girl Scout
councils must first deliber
ate about changes in values,
in demography and in the
economy; they must be thor
oughly familiar with the
laws, orders and regulations
governing a changing work
force, and they must com
bine sound business prac
tices with their task of
meeting the needs of girls.
This seminar for which
participants will receive 4.5
continuing eduction units
(CEUs) is part of the Girl
Scouts’ overall training pro
gram for volunteers and pro
fessional staff members
totaling 570,000 nationwide.
Training that the organiza
tion provides for troop lead
ers and other volunteers
constitutes one of the world’s
largest adult education pro
grams.
