Practicing For Meet
Calvin Garland of the Forsyth County Barbell Club lifts approximately 200 pounds at a
practice last week. His best weights are 210 in the snatch and 265 pounds in the clear jerk. As
his shirt indicates, his club holds the 1980 Junior Olympics national weightlifting
championship. The club is raising money to go to Colorado to defend the title this summer.
The lifters practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and on Saturdays at 9 a.m.
International Skill
Olympics Set June 14
Georgia will take another
step toward becoming inter
nationally prominent this
month when Atlanta be
comes the setting for the
International Skill Olym
pics. This will be the first
time in the 30-year history of
the competition that it will
be held in the United States.
Young artisans from Asia,
Europe and the U.S. will
compete in 33 different con
tests in craft, industrial and
service trade areas.
Participants from 15 na
tions will be represented in
competitions starting June
14 at the Georgia World Con
gress Center. The three-day
event will be open to the
public without charge.
