Knowing The Label
You probably figured you
already knew how to read.
However, labels take some
special training before you
can understand their mes
sage.
Most people look for the
brand and the price on the
label, and stop there. But
that label can help you get
what you’re shopping for,
tell you how to use it, and
possibly save you money.
Not all food labels are al
ike, but all of them must
carry certain information.
They must list the name of
the product; the net contents
or net weight; and the name
and place of business of the
manufacturer, packer or dis
tributor—
INGREDIENTS LISTED
On most foods, the ingre
dients must be listed on the
iabel. The major ingredient,
by weight, must be listed
first, followed in descending
order by the other ingre
dients.
The Food and Drug Ad
ministration has set what
they call “standards of iden
tity” for some foods. This
means that all goods called
by a particular name must
contain certain ingredients.
For instance, catsup must
have some tomatoes. The
labels of these items don’t
have to list the mandatory
ingredients but they must
list the optional ingredients.
Some foods call them
selves imitations of other
foods. The FDA declares
that product that is not as
nutritious as the product that

WHAT ABOUT GRADES?
If a product is similar to an
existing one and is as nutri
tious, a new name can be
made up for it.
Some foods carry a grade
on the label set by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture
(USDA) or by state health
departments. Grades are
based on the quality of the
products, such as taste, tex
ture and appearance. USDA
grades products such as
eggs, meat, butter , and
canned fruits and vegeta
bles, only at the request of
the manufacturer or proc
essor.
Milk and milk products
have been graded by state
milk sanitation rating offi
cers who have been certified
by FDA. This grade means
that the product has been
processed or manufactured
under FDA - recommended
sanitary standards that are
enforced by state health
agencies.
NUTRITIONAL INFORMA
TION, TOO
State and USDA grades
are not based on nutritional
values. However, FDA has
established standards re
quiring certain levels of vita
mins A and D when these
vitamins are added to milk.
One more piece of infor
mation is on some labels.
Any food to which a nutrient
has been added, or for which
a nutritional claim is made,
must bear complete nutritio
nal information on the label.

The High Cost Of Late Refunds
Every refunder knows
what it is like to wait long
weeks for a refund to arrive
in the mailbox.
Six weeks go by, then
eight. After 12 weeks, we get
mad.
Here is what Philomena
Murray of Allentown, Pa.,
had to say about her late
refund problem: “Several
months ago I sent in for the
‘BO Cents Worth of Salad Pro
duce’ offer made jointly by
H.J. Heinz Co. and Procter
and Gamble.
“I waited the “four to six
weeks” mentioned on the
refund form and received
nothing. I then waited an
other six weeks and, still
without word of my refund,
sent a letter about the prob
lem to the clearinghouse.
“Eight more weeks went
by, and I was still without
my 80-cent coupon for pro
duce. I then wrote to both
H.J. Heinz and Procter and
Gamble. The very next day I
received the produce coupon
that I had sent for 20 weeks
earlier.
“A week later Heinz sent
me a 50-cent coupon and a
letter of apology, saying that
my complaint had been for
warded to the clearinghouse.
A week later I received a
second 80-cent coupon from
the clearinghouse.
“Two weeks after that,
Procter and Gamble wrote
to me, expressing apprecia
tion for the chance to make
good on the offer. The com
pany also included 98 cents
in cash the value of the 80-
cent coupon plus 18 cents to
reimburse me for my post
age.
“It is good to know that
both the clearinghouse and
the companies were so anx
ious to correct the problem
that was caused by the long
delay in receiving my re
fund.”
Twenty weeks is much too
long to wait for a refund.

These companies certainly
wouldn’t want Mrs. Murray
to wait 20 weeks between
purchases of their products.
Because of the delay the
companies sent her $3.08 in
cash and coupons, and their
cost to send them out must
have been at least as much.
Many refunders aren’t as
forgiving as Mrs. Murray.
When they have waited 12
weeks and still haven’t re
ceived their refund, they not
only send out a complaint
letter to the manufacturer
but also change brands.
