Gl Insurance Hoax
Being Attempted
The perennial GI Insur
ance hoax is rearing its ugly
head again, but this time a
new wrinkle has been added;
one that has sparked the
interest of postal authorities.
Georgia Commissioner of
Veterans Affairs Pete
Wheeler says the latest
handbills, advising World
War II veterans that they
can collect a non-existent
insurance dividend, also
promise to "cut government
red tape” by supplying an
address for a quick dividend
payment in return for $lO
which is to be sent to an

The Forsyth County grant

Grant amounts ranged

On Friday, the music will

The solicitation of the $lO
payment brought postal offi
cials into the picture. They
have questioned one individ
ual who was distributing the
leaflets at a veterans’ orga

sin. The latest fraudulent
flyers also have appeared in
Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana,
and Louisiana.
Wheeler says, "It’s only a
matter of time until the leaf
lets start showing up in
Georgia.”
Urging veterans to ignore
the handbills, Wheeler said,

electronic equipment items
currently installed aboard
Navy and Marine Corps Air
craft.
They studied airborne ra

computer equipment, plus
the technical manuals,
safety precautions and trou
bleshooting procedures used
for maintaining each.

Adopt-A-Cat Month
Always one to stand up for the little guys, the Big Daddy of cats, TV’s Morris the Cat is taking
up the cause of homeless cats and kittens like the one here on the left. June is natioanal Adopt-
A-Cat month, sponsored by Nine-Lives Cat Food for the American Humane Association. It
wasn't long ago that Morris was a homeless young cat in an animal shelter before he was
tapped for stardom. In conjunction with Adopt-A-Cat month, the Forsyth County Humane
Society is encouraging the public’s adoption of its many kittens. (Spring and early summer
are peak breeding seasons for cats.) With each feline that is adopted, the society is offering a
free gift “graduation” package, compliments of Morris and Nine-Lives, which includes an
official “pet degree," the Morris Method book of cat care, a “paw-to-graph” of Morris and
free cat food coupons. For information about adopting a cat or kitten, contact the society at
887-6480.

“In previous years, the hoax
had veterans wasting only
time and the cost of a post
age stamp; now, however,
there is the chance of losing
the $10.”
The insurance hoax has
been cropping up in a variety
of forms since 1948. Official
looking forms, complete
with the legitimate address
of the VA Insurance Center,
just begin appearing at
meetings of unions, verte
rans’ groups, and in public
places such as shopping cen
ters. In some instances, a
number of unsuspecting
newspapers have passed on
what they thought to be
"good news.”
Wheeler said that no one
could ever figure any logical
motive for the hoax before
except, perhaps, to create a
lot of extra work for the VA.
Now, though, it appears that
someone has decided to try
and make a profit out of the
gullibility of people.
In addition to his repeated
advising of verterans to ig
nore such leaflets, Wheeler
says a report should be made
to local police officials when
anyone is observed produc
ing or distributing the so
called application forms.
