Adopt-A-Cat Month
Is Recognized Here
Since June is Adopt-a-cat
month, let’s talk about cats
this week.
The origin of cats is not
clear, however, it is believed
they originated from a spe
cies of African and Asian
wildcats. In ancient Eqypt,
cats were considered gods,
and were protected from
harm by decree. It is be
lieved that cats earned this
high state because of their
ability to control rats and
mice in the all-important
granaries of Egypt. When
death occurred they were
embalmed and buried with
mummified mice as food for
their trip into the hereafter.
Cats rank #2 in popularity
as house pets, second only to
dogs. Cats are also affection

Elected State President
Forsyth County High School student Andy Martin was recently elected state president of the
Future Farmers of America organization. FFA is an organization for students of vocational
agriculture. Andy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emory M. Martin of the Coal Mountain
community. He was elected to the position by delegates at the state convention held in
Covington. Andy is the first Forsyth County FFA chapter member to be elected state FFA
president. (The local chapter has been in existence since 1956.) He will preside over 16,000
FFA members in the state, and represent them at the national level in Washington, D.C. and
Kansas City, Mo. Mike Harris and Scott Worley were the two chapter delegates who
represented Forsyth County at the convention. They are both chapter officers.
Wilkie To Attend
Honors Institute
Susan Wilkie, grand
daughter of Mrs. Elmer
Pirkle of Cumming, has been
selected to attend the 14th
annual Phi Theta Kappa
Honors Institute in New
York, June 7-12.
A May 30 graduate of Re
inhardt College in Waleska,
Susan was president of the
college’s local chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa.
The theme of this year’s
Honors Institute at the State
University of New York is
“Curtain Time”, and gives
more than 300 college stu
dents, from across the coun
try, an opportunity to attend
and study a number of On-
Broadway and Off-Broad
way performances.
In addition, the students
will have an opportunity to
meet and study with a num
ber of prominent play
wrights, actors, directors
and professors of drama.
Among the topics to be cov
ered will be auditioning for

ate, but are more reserved in
their show of affection. Cats,
being more independent are
not as anxious to please their
owners as dogs are.
Cats can be trained in
many areas. They are far
easier to housebreak than
puppies. My daughter has
two Siamese cats she has
trained to use the standard
toilet. (They haven’t caught
on to the flushing part yet).
Cats are also meticulously
clean and prefer to take care
of themselves without any
help.
There are many old wives
tales concerning cats.
Among them: after a cat
finishes washing its face, the
first one it looks at will re
ceive a visitor; cats attract
plays, acting, writing and
directing.

Cats have a life span of
about 15 years, though one
was known to have lived 36
years.
They have an average lit

one Siamese cat gave birth
to 13, of which 11 survived.
If you own a cat it is one of
approximately 28 million in
the U.S., and you own one of
the most graceful, well-coor

mal kingdom.

THE TORNADO
Of all the winds, the tor
nado is the most violent. Its
