You Feed Garden;
It Will Feed You
How well your garden sup
plies you and your family
with a bountiful harvest of
delicious and nutritious food
often depends on how well
you feed it; that is, supply it
with the essential nutrients
plants need for growth.
The soil is the primary
storehouse from which
plants obtain their food. Pe
riodically this storehouse
needs to be replenished.
Usually you do this by apply
ing commercial fertilizers to
the soil.
Fertilizers are sold by
grades such as 6-12-12 or
5-16-15. These numbers
refer to the percent nitrogen,
phosphorus and potash, re
spectively. In 100 pounds of
5-10-15 there are 5 pounds of
total nitrogen, 10 pounds of
available phosphorus, and 15
pounds of soluable potash—a
total of 30 pounds of plant
nutrients. Some fertilizers
may contain other nutrients
in addition to nitrogen, phos
phorus, and potassium. If so,
the names and amounts of
these compounds should be
listed on the label.
The first step in properly
feeding your garden is soil
testing. Samples should be
collected and analyzed at
least three months before
planting your garden. If lim
ing is needed, this allows
ample time for it to react
with your soil and adjust the
pH.
Your local county exten
sion office has soil sample
bags and instructions for
taking samples. The soil
testing laboratory chemi
cally analyzes the soil and
determines the soil pH and
how much phosphorus, po
tassium, calcium, and mag
nesium are in your
particular soil. Based on
your soil type laboratory
personnel then recommend
the kinds and amounts of
plant food (including lime)
that should be applied to
your garden.
Most vegetables grow best
in a soil with a pH around 6.0
to 6.5. In more acid soils, say
with a pH from 4.5 to 5.5,
vegetables grow very
poorly.
Dolomitic lime is usually
recommended to adjust the
pH because it also supplies
magnesium, a plant nutrient

that is often deficient in
Georgia soils. By following
the laboratory recommenda
tions you will maintain a
proper soil pH and provide
your plants with adequate
amounts of needed nutrients.
On clay soils, all the rec
ommended nitrogen, phos
phorus and potassium may
be braodcast and incorpo
rated into the soil immedi
ately prior to planting. On
sandy soils, nitrogen and po
tassium may be leached out
of the root zone. So it is
usually better to apply only
about one-third of the rec
ommended fertilizer prior to
planting. It may be applied
broadcast or banded. Band
ing consists of applying the
fertilizer in narrow one-to-t
--wo-inch bands three inches
to either side of the row and
slightly below the seed level.
The remaining two-thirds
should be applied in two to
three sidedressings at two to
three week intervals after
the vegetables come up.
When applying the sidedres
sing, keep the fertilizer seve
ral inches away from the
plants to prevent fertilizer
damage.
Nitrogen may be leached
from sandy soils very
quickly if heavy rains occur.
If your plants develop nitro
gen deficiency symptoms
(loss of dark green color)
apply an additional nitrogen
sidedressing of about 30 to 40
pounds actual nitrogen per
acre. A nitrate form of nitro
gen such as calcium or po
tassium nitrate is
recommended.
In feeding your garden,
apply the recommended
amounts of fertilizer. Don’t
overfertilize. Too much
plant food can cause exces
sive vegetative growth or
even serious damage to your
vegetables.
