FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH
Jesus gave us the Church
lU> keep us humble, among
other things. Sound strange?
Perhaps, but the Church is a
joint venture between Christ
and His people.
He told us that the Church
would be His body in the
world and that we individu
ally would be equipped to
serve as various parts of the
body. By being a part of the
body, the body, who is
Christ, gets the credit and
honor for any accomplish
ments of the parts of the
body.
The true Christian knows
he is to honor and glorify
Christ by what he does
rather than seeking personal
recognition and glory. Christ
will see that he is properly
rewarded.
When we act as a part of
the body of Christ, attention
and recognition is given
Him. All too often folks who
are down on the church have
an ego problem. Things are
fine if they’re in the spotlight
and getting attention, but
when the Church as a whole

Flanagan Preaches
50 Special Years
BY SCOTT VAUGHAN
Staff Writer
The Rev. William Flana
gan, of Park Street, Cum
ming, preached another of
his sermons recently at the
site where he preached his
first sermon in 1931.
This recent service, held
on Sunday, June 14, 1981 at
2:30 p.m. marked Flana
gan’s 50th year of preaching
in the Hightower Baptist As
sociation, and Flanagan said
he can only think of one other
pastor who has preached
longer than he in the associa
tion.
The site of this “memorial
service” was held at Elzey
Grove, where Rev. Flanagan
preached his first sermon.
“Back then there was just a
dwelling house we used for
services,” Rev. Flannagan
said.
In order to hold the special
service the area had to be
cleared off, and the house
had long since disappeared.
“I had to find the owner of
the property,” Rev. Flanna
gan said. “I don’t go on an
other man’s property. We
had to clear it off for the
service. That spot is one of
the most beautiful spots
around.”
During his 50 years of
preaching, Rev. Flanagan
has pastored churches in
Forsyth, Cherokee, Dawson,
Pickens and Hall Counties.
He said his longest
pastorship was at Mt. Pisgah
Baptist in Forsyth County,
where he preached eight
years. He is a present mem
ber of Settendown Baptist
Church.
“I’ve always been in
volved with rural churches,”
Rev. Flanagan said. “There
have been a lot of mirac
ulous things happen in these
50 years of preaching.”
Rev. Flanagan said in 1945
he bought the land and
helped organize the current
Second Baptist Church on
the old Atlanta Highway.
“To this day I’ve never met
the two ladies from south
Georgia, whom I bought the
land from. The county ordi
nary at that time handled the
transaction for me.”
“The Lord has been good
to me,” Rev. Flanagan said.

on easy and cleans up fast.
“Back in the early days,
there were very few people
who had money. I went
straight into farming while I
was preaching.”
He said at the beginning of
his preaching days he would
walk 10 to 12 miles to a
service. “By the time I
reached the church, I was
covered in dust and dirt,” he
said. “But, everyone else
was in the same shape.
The mode of travel soon
turned to a horse and buggy,
and then Rev. Flanagan said
he drove a T-model Ford. “I
drove that T-model all over
this country,” he said.
He added he could remem
ber revivals when he went to
every door in Cumming, and
some in the county, knocking

Wilson’s reaction “They

Rev. Flanagan has seen a
lot of churches and he said
he likes to spend his time
visiting churches throughout
the county and other areas.
“I’ve found that the mass

said. “There’s also a lack of
love in some churches.”

Rev. Flanagan said he has
found that pastors today
must be pretty strong peo

have someone in the hospital

under a lot of pressure.”
Throughout his 50 years,

In what way is the testi
mony of Jesus the Spirit of
prophecy? 1-Apart from the
testimony of the Person of
Christ there should be no
more proclamation of the
Gospel. I Cor. 2:1-2.
“When I came to you, my
brothers, to preach God’s
secret truth to y0u,...1 made
up my mind to forget every
thing except Jesus Christ,
and especially his death on
the cross.” Gal. 1:6. “There
is no other Gospel beside the
Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
2- the proclamation of
the gospel is closely related
to the testimony that the
believer has in Jesus Christ.
The believer’s life should be
a living witness of the testi
mony of Christ before he
proclaims it.
3- in the Person of
Jesus Christ and His testi
mony there is the answer to
every question and the sup
ply to every need. Because
his testimony is sufficient for
everything, we proclaim
