Drawings Set July 4th
In its continuing effort to raise money for the proposed Forsyth County community center
building fund, the Sawnee Association of the Arts is now selling tickets for chances to win a
hand-decorated egg and an afghan. SAA members Ann Hamilton and Jim DeSana here hold
the items. The egg was made and donated by SAA member Louise Mashburn while Dorothy
Hobart made and donated the cream-colored afghan. Tickets for the hand-crafted items are
being sold for $1 each. Separate drawings for each item will be held July 4. Tickets can be
purchased at the SAA gallery in Cumming.

Coupon Clipper
The Johnny Appleseed
Of The Coupon Craze
One recent morning my
neighbor Wendy bounced
into my kitchen, barely con
cealing her excitement.
“Have you heard what I’ve
been doing?’’ she asked.
I had, but I didn’t want to
spoil her fun. “Tell me all
about it," I said.
“One morning as I was
drinking my coffee, I sud
denly thought to mysdlf that
I would like to help a lot of
people in this town save
money with coupons, just the
way I do,” she explainer
“Then I got this inspiration.
“That afternoon I visited
my mother and found five
hat boxes in her attic. When I
got home I went through my
coupons, found some that
had expired and glued them
around the outside of each
box. Next I attached a sign
that said ‘coupon exchange’
to each box. Then I took

coupons for products I don’t
use and put about two dozen
in each box.
“That sounds nice,” I said.
“But where did you put the
boxes?"
“I put them in my car and
followed the same route that
I take every shopping day,”
she told me. “I took the first
box into the bank. The man
ager wasn’t too excited
about the idea, but when
some of his customers came
over and asked to look
through the coupons, he
agreed to keep the box on the
table that people use to fill
out their deposit slips.
“The next stop was the
laundromat that I have been
using since my washer broke
down. This one was easy
because the owner is a cou
pon clipper.
“The supermarket wasn’t
as hard as I thought it would
be. Frank, the manger,
found a spot for it on top of
the pantyhose display.
“The public library got the
fourth box, and the deli at
the comer of Main and Har
vey got the fifth.
“I guess you could say that
I’ve become the Johnny Ap
pleseed of coupons,” said
Wendy with a twinkle in her
eye.
“That’s wonderful,” I
said. “You’re soon going to
have everyone in town using
coupons. But did you put a
note on the exchange box
asking people to put into the
box as many coupons as they
take out?
“You have planted coupon
seeds all over town. But if
you want them to survive,
you may have to water them
regularly with additional
coupons.”
“Gee, I never thought of
that,” said Wendy as she
rushed out the door to add
