Beetles Remain
Under Control
The most recent aerial
survey conducted by the
Management Department of
the Georgia Forestry Com
mission revealed there are
no serious outbreaks of bark
beetle infestation in the state
at the present time.
Although Commission En
tomologist Terry Price said
beetle populations are ex
pected to remain static
throughout 1981, he em
phasized that severe dry
weather during the summer
months could influence the
insects to increase to moder
ate levels by fall of this year.
Price said Southern Pine
beetle activity is concen
trated in Northeast Georgia
and “ground checks made in
those counties revealed a
close association between lit
tleleaf disease and incidence
of Southern Pine beetle.” He
said most of the spots had
one to five red-topped trees
and no actively green in
fested trees were discov
ered.
He said Ips and Turpentine
beetle activity is “very low”
statewide. “Increased activ
ity however, is expected to
occur due to rainfall defi
ciencies throughout the
state,” according to the ento
mologist, “and landowners
need to stay alert to suspect
beetle damage.”
The Southern Pine beetle
dectetion data showed infes
tation was found in Hall,
Habersham, and Lumpkin
Counties, as well as in other
counties.
The Ips and blackturpen
tine beetle aerial detection
data showed counties with
