History Shows Attitudes
BY M.J. GRAVITT
Sawnee EMC
When the dawning of the
electric age revolutionized
American life in the early
part of this century, electric
power generally was viewed
as a commodity that was not
to be wasted. A major reason
was the cost, for electric
power initially was even
more expensive than it is
today.
As a result, consumers
learned to use this energy
source sparingly. They used
as much as was necessary,
but took great care not to be
wasteful.
In succeeding years, as the
price of electricity dropped
steadily, this attitude was
replaced by a feeling that
because electric power was
so cheap, it should be con
sumed as needed without
great attention to conserva
tion.
The events of the past de
cade now have brought us
full circle. Rising construc
tion costs and increasing
government regulations
have made power plants
more expensive to build.
Electricity is no longer

cheap, and because of our
country’s dependence upon
foreign oil, supplies are now
less certain.
The time has come for all
of us to face these hard facts
and take action to make sure
that we have an adequate,
affordable energy supply
through the 80s. One way is
by participating in our en
ergy management program,
Watt Wiser, this summer.
Watt Wiser is a six-year
old program sponsored
jointly by Sawnee EMC and
our power supplier, Ogle
thorpe Power Corporation. It
is a voluntary effort that
aims at keeping electric de
mand lower during times of
high energy use.
Sawnee EMC consumers
are asked to defer the use of
high energy using appli
ances during hot afternoons
and to make sure that appli
ances which must be in use
are operated efficiently.
On days when an ex
tremely high electric de
mand is likely to occur,
Sawnee EMC will notify con
sumers by bulletin from
local radio stations and ask
that energy management

practices be put into effect.
The result of keeping de
mand lower during high de
mand times will be to keep
future rate increases lower.
In the weeks ahead, this
column will discuss other
aspects of the Watt Wiser ’Bl
program including historical
developments that have con
tributed to the present state
of energy costs and supplies
and ways to make the home
more energy efficient.
The information will be
supplemented by a series of
energy saving tips to be of
fered on our behalf by local
radio stations. At Sawnee
EMC, we believe that ad
equate, affordable electric
energy is a realistic goal.
