Twenty Georgia schools
and school systems have re
ceived federal funds to
implement projects to over
come sex discrimination in
vocational education pro
grams.
The funds, provided by the
U. S. Department of Educa
tion and disbursed by the
Georgia Department of Edu
cation, which also selected
the projects, were awarded
competitively as grants
ranging from $1,275 to $5,000.
All school systems and
postsecondary schools in the
state were invited to submit
written proposals for consid
eration, according to Loydia
Webber, sex equity coordi
nator for the state education
department’s Office of Voca
tional Education.
Webber said the projects
chosen “are exemplary pro
jects designed to be an incen
tive to local education
agencies to put forth efforts
to eliminate sex bias, sex
role stereotyping and sex
discrimination from all vo
cational programs and activ
ities.”
“A lot of flexibility was
allowed to let local education
agencies come up with pro
posals based on their
needs,” she said. As a result,
the projects funded vary.
They range from a program
to train displaced homemak
ers, workshops for school
personnel, to projects to de
velop audiovisual aids and
printed materials to promote
eqpty in vocational educa
tion.
One of the projects receiv
ing a $5,000 grant was pro
posed by Dekalb Area
Vocational-Technical
School. Dekalb requested
fuhds to organize a club for
students enrolled in courses
traditionally dominated by
either men or women -
women in auto mechanics,
example, or men in nursing.
’The original purpose of the
cUib was to provide counsel
ing and support services to
these students. According to
Ins Criscoe, job placement
coordinator for Dekalb
Tech; the club has gone be
yond that. Now the club,
which was planned last year
before the money became
available, also “tries to
reach out to anyone who has
not thought about vocational
education to let them know
of the opportunities avail
able to them.”
t)alton Public Schools was
another recipient of $5,000

about 15 girls interested in
exploring construction or
