Forsyth Country Day
Is Set For Saturday
Country Day, a Saturday
of barbecue, entertainment
and speechifying, has been
set for June 27 at the Forsyth
County High School Sta
dium.
The list of guests will in
clude U.S. Sen. Mack Mat
tingly, Alvin Jenkins of the
American Agriculture Asso
ciation, and state association
President Tommy Kersey.
The second Country Day is
being sponsored primarily
by. the local chapter of the
American Agriculture Asso
ciation, its backers say. The
local Republican Party was
brought in to help with the
organization, said E.H.
Reid, local AAA president.
“We just asked the Republi
cans to help us get the sen
ator and do the publicity,”
he said.
An afternoon of barbecue,
clogging, and speeches are
planned. There will be a
cakewalk, auctions of items
from about 100 merchants in
two states, and many free
prizes. There will be live

guest list besides Mattingly,
Jenkins and Kersey. State
Reps. Joe T. Wood, Bobby
Lawson and Jerry Jackson
have been invited. So have
Forsyth County state Sens.
Max Brannon and Nathan
Deal, and John Foster of
Dawson County.
The mayor and city coun
cil of Cumming have been
invited, and so have the For
syth County Board of Com
missioners.
Republican gubenatorial
hopefuls Ben Blackburn and
Bob Bell have been invited.
At press time, the farmers
were trying to invite possible
democratic gubenatorial
contenders Norman Under
wood and Billy Lovett.
The guest list will also
include a beauty queen,
Gaye Bell of DeKalb County,
the recently-crowned Miss
Continental United States.
Live entertainment will in
clude country music and

An agricultural equipment
display is tenatively sched
uled, and the Forsyth County
Volunteer Fire Department
will have a truck on display.
Shortly before Country
Day begins, farmers and
implement dealers will have
a parade of tractors and the
latest farm equipment from
the Forsyth County Court
house to the high school.
Donations for prizes and
items to be auctioned have
been contributed by mer
chants in two states. Besides
Cumming and the Forsyth
County area, merchants in
Dawsonville, Gainesville,
Marietta, Roswell, Alpha
retta and McDonald have
donated to Country Day. One
donation even came from
South Carolina.
The approximately 100
merchants include hardware

feed, free dinners, a country
ham, a car stereo speaker
set and a reproduction

Some of the donations will
be given away as free prizes.
The rest will be auctioned off
by farmer spokesman Jen
kins, an expert auctioneer.
There will also be an old
fashioned cake walk. It is
expected to go on for a long
time because there are 50
cakes to dispose of.
The barbecue will be
served in the Otwell Middle
