Sawtimber At High
Both pine puipwood and
sawtixnber stumpage prices
went up in Georgia last
month.
According to the latest
Timber Mart-South report,
the statewide average for
pine puipwood stumpage in
May was $23 per cord. Pine
sawtimber was $l6O per
thousand board feet.
This is an all-time high
average for sawtimber, says
Ted Walker, Extension Serv
ice forester who summerized
last month's timber report.
Walker added that puipwood
prices equalled the all-time
high for a few months back.
The Extension forester
said the demand outlook for
June is fair in all parts of the
state for both sawtimber and
puipwood.
Walker pointed out that
local prices often vary from
those reported in Timber
Mart-South. He added, how
ever, that prices in the re
port do help determine
pricing trends.
The complete timber re
port, which gives area prices
and prices of other forest
products both as standing
timber and delivered, is on
file in the county Extension
office for landowners who
are interested in more de
tailed information.
A GOOD INVESTMENT
Speaking of timber,
Walker says Southern forest
land is a good investment.
He says many industries and
individuals are investing in
foresi ,and. In addition, for
eign investors are actively
pur, hasing land in Georgia
and other Southern states.
Walker says there are sev
eral reasons for this: the
increase in demand for for
est products from the South,
anticipated increases in tim
ber prices, rising land va
lues, and the growth rate of
trees.

Blossom-end rot of toma
toes, pepper, and watermel
ons is a physiological
disorder caused by a cal
cium deficiency in the fruit.
It can have several causes,
the most likely is a low soil
pH and/or low calcium in the
soil. It can also be triggered
by large fluctuations of soil
moisture either too wet or
too dry. Using an ammo
nium form of nitrogen or
having an imbalance of plant
nutrients can also be the
culprit. Some varieties of
plants are more susceptible
than others. A restricted root
area due to soil compaction
or poor soil prepartion may
also be contributing factors.
Some things that you can
do to lessen the chances of
having blossom-end rot are
to select a well drained area,
prepare your soil thoroughly
before planting, have your
soil tested and add enough
lime to maintain a soil pH of
between 6.0 and 6.5, use cal
cium nitrate or other nitrate
form of nitrogen and try to
maintain a fairly uniform
moisture level.
When blossom-end rot
does occur it can usually be
stopped by spraying the en
tire plant with calcium chlo
ride at the rate of 4
tablespoons per gallon of wa
ter or spraying with one of
the chelated calcium com
pounds according to direc
tions on the label.

Selling Timber
Trees are the best soil con

timber sales provide the best

“Many people are sur

says Gary Tyre, forester
with the Soil Conservation
Service, USDA, at Athens.
“Of course, our interest
