The Vacation Reading
Club at Forsyth County Pub
lic Library is in full swing,
with its 1981 theme, “Read
ing Rodeo.” 456 youngsters
have so far set individual
goals for the number of
books they plan to read this
summer.
It is not too late to join.
Each child who reaches his
goal by Aug. 15 will receive a
certificate and a free ham
burger from McDonald’s in
Cumming. When one sur
passes his goal, a gold star is
added to the certificate.
Preschoolers may join the
club if there is someone to
read to them. They may also
earn a certificate and a free
hamburger.
The library staff encour
ages all youngsters to partic
ipate in the club because it
will mean maintaining read
ing skills already learned
and preparing for new ones.

Your Yard
Is Mistake
A home can be a show
place or it can miss the boat.
It all depends on how the
homeowner follows basic
landscaping principles, says
Bill Slack, Georgia Exten
sion Service landscape ar
chitect.
A well-landscaped yard
looks good because it honors
certain rules of design that
please the eye, says Slack.
“The design can be symmet
ric or asymmetric. Symmet
ric design means a duplicate
or mirror image; a sidewalk
or front door could be the
central point. Asymmetric
design is an attempt to strike
a visual balance using differ
ent elements, such as one
large tree balanced by a
cluster of smaller trees.”
Another element of design
is unity. Slack defines unity
as a feeling that everything
fits together or flows well.
Landscapers achieve unity
through the repeated use of
plant materials or consturc
tion materials.
Accent is another ingre
dient in landscape design.
Slack says, “An accent is
something that contrasts
with the dominant feature
through color or a change in
line or form. A fountain’
statue or birdbath can be an
accent.”
Sometimes a home land
scape looks busy or clut
tered. Slack blames too
many varieties or too many
colors. He recommends rep
etition of colors or varieties
to keep the clutter down.
Another problem could be
the relationship between el
ements in the landscape.
Choose the size and number
of plants in scale with the
house and lot size, says the
architect.
“The most common mis
take in home landscaping is
overdoing it or filling up ev
ery square foot of space with
something. Too often we see
yards jam-paced with bird
baths, pink flamingoes and
plastic yellow daisies. The
whole idea with landscaping
is to create space in your
yard, not to fill it up.” Slack
explains.
granted to the city several
years ago when the new city
raw water intake was built.
Public comments may still
be submitted this week, even
though the official period has
passed, said EPD’s Gib
Johnson. If someone
strongly disagrees, then
EPD will have a public hear
ing before considering the
permit renewal, he said. If
no one bothers to object,
EPD will routinely renew
the permit.
A copy of the permit is on
file with the EPD in Room
825, the Trinity-Washington
Building, 270 Washington St.,
S.W., near the state capitol
in Atlanta during normal
business hours.

ing your lips even when your
upper and lower teeth are
together?
• Is your lower jaw either
too prominent or insuffi
cient?
If you answered “yes" to
one or more of these ques
tions, you may need to see an
orthodontist.
Abnormal jaw growth can
cause those facial condi
tions.
Frequently, and ortho
dontist will team up with an
oral surgeon to correct the
problem.
This has brought a lot of
hope to adult patients. To
day, about 20% of orthodon
tic patients are adults.
Initially, the orthodontist
and oral surgeon confer to
develop a treatment plan.
Generally, the orthodontist
will align and coordinate the
upper and lower teeth first.
Then, the surgeon will cor
rectly position the jaws. Af

Fireworks Are Illegal,
State Official Warns
With the approach of the
Fourth of July in mind,
Safety Fire Commissioner
Johnnie Caldwell has issued
a reminder that using fire
works is illegal in Georgia,
except for authorized public
displays.
Caldwell said, “I’m sure
that Georgia’s fireworks law
has kept countless children
and adults from losing
eyes, or hands, or from suf
fering some other serious
injury. But we continue to
have people injured from
using fireworks that come
from other states. . . espe
cially on the Fourth of July
and during the Christmas
New Year season.”
Caldwell said Georgia Law
specifically prohibits the
sale or use of fireworks ex
cept for public exhibitions
authorized by the county
judge of probate court. The
law includes sparklers, ro
man candles, sky rockets
and similar combustibles
and explosives.
“The Fourth of July is one
of our great national holi
days,” said Cladwell, “and
we urge Georgians to cele
brate and enjoy it. But let’s
leave the handling of fire
works to those who are li
censed to use them at public
displays, and not risk the
loss of an eye or some other
serious injury.”
He said the number of fire-
