Hot Weather Is Harmful
Summer has finally ar
rived, along with swimming,
picnics, beach trips and high
temperatures. And high tem
peratures can be harmful if
not treated with precaution.
Exposure to excessive
heat, especially when ac
companied by strenuous ac
tivity, can lead to heat
stroke, heat exhaustion or
fainting.
According to Dr. Morris
Brackett of the Georgia De
partment of Human Re
sources over 100 heat-related
deaths occurred in Georgia
last year. “Many of these
deaths probably could have
been prevented if more was
known about prevention and
Immediate treatment re
quired for serious heat ill
nesses,” says Dr. Brackett.
The most serious heat-re
lated illness is heat stroke.
Because of the high fever
that accompanies heat
stroke, it is important to
contact a physician quickly.
The early symptoms are
sweating and a flushed face,
which progress to dry, red,
hot skin, a rapid pulse and a
fever of 104 degrees or
above. The victim may also
become unconscious.
“The main objective in
treating a heat stroke victim
is to lower the body tempera
ture. Cool water, fans and
ice bags should be used to
reduce the fever. Don’t try to
lower the fever to less than
100.5 degrees before expert
help arrives,” Dr. Brackett
emphasized.

The elderly and persons
with heart trouble run a high
risk of dying from heat
stroke unless they receive
medical attention. The heat
stroke mortality rate for
these individuals can run as
high as 50 percent.
Prolonged sweating doe to
heat exposure and fatigue
can cause heat exhaustion.
This usually takes a few
days before any symptoms
will appear. At the onset of
heat exhaustion, the skin be

fatigue, muscle cramps,
thirst, fever and nausea, will
usually occur. The body tem
perature is elevated, but not
as high as with a heat stroke.
For relief, a mixture of one
teaspoon of salt to an eight
ounce glass of water should
be sipped by the victim. He
should rest for two or three
days and drink plenty of flu
ids.

six quarts of fluid per day. It
is important to drink plenty
of fluid when working in a
hot environment,” said Dr.
Brackett.
Another heat-related ill
ness is heat syncope (faint
ing). This is common and
should not cause much
alarm. It is usually a result
of participating in strenuous
activity in the heat. The vic
tim’s pulse weakens and his
skin becomes cool and pale.
He should rest in a cool area
and drink fluids to regain his
strength.

Excessive sun exposure
can also lead to sunburn.
While most bums are mild, it
is possible to receive sun

degree bums. The skin be

in blisters, causing extreme
pain.
Enjoy the summer sun but
avoid any possible discom
