Lifestyles Can
Affect Inflation
GUMMING
FIRST METHODIST
A lot of people are worried
about inflation and so am I,
but I see it from a different
perspective. There is much
economic and political talk
going around today about
inflation and how to define it
and attempt to control it.
The economics people tell us
that inflation is runaway
prices. This is true, but also
inflation is runaway life
style. Everyone seeks a bet
ter and better lifestyle until
we have reached the point
where production can not
keep up with the insatiable
demands for increased life
style.
There is a religious side to
inflation and I think it is the
crux of the matter but it gets
little attention. Inflation is
basically a problem of poor
stewardship and greediness.
I read an article in the
Emory Committee of 100 Cir
cuit Rider that speaks to the
religious side of inflation. I
would like to share this
timely article with you for
your consideration. Think
about it!
The London Times called
for preachers to help cope
with run away infaltion that
European Nations are strug
gling with. The theme was
that the problem is basically
a religious and moral prot>
lem requiring more than
economic and political tin
kering, perhaps even a radi
cal reappraisal of our entire
lifestyle. They insist that in
flation is an economist’s
word for over-consumption,
for living beyond our income
and having a fanciful and
unrealistic notion of the stan
dard of living to which we
are entitled. I thought of how
we Americans who comprise
six percent of the earth’s
family insist on using 33 per
cent of the world’s crude oil
and consume seven times as
much of material resources
as one billion of the less
privileged of the earth. The
Times suggests that we have
built the deadly sins of pride,
envy, avarice, gluttony and

sloth into the structures of
our society, forgetting the
ancient danger of excessive
indebtedness. I thought of
how Jesus came into the
world that is prone to perish,
where man’s pride and
greed are rampant, and peo

their, own appetites and plea

losing what we have and
blind to the emptiness of it

His lifestyle was simple,
more open to God and the

life we have ever known. We
are called to be like Him.
Our life does not consist of

anyone would come after

Whether you’re a weekly
bowler or someone who’s
never even been in a bowling
center, you can participate
and have a chance to win
some great prizes.
Under Bowl-for-Breath
rules, each participant signs
up sponsors ahead of time
who pledge at least a penny a
pin for every point scored.
He or she then bowls three
games, collects the pledges
and turns them in, and is
eligible for center and
statewide grand prizes.
Prizes are awarded not on
bowling scores but on the
number of sponsors. Last
years’s winner was Nancy
Wilkins from Cave Springs,
who raised $1195 from 273
sponsors.
The 1981 Ist prize winner
at each bowling center will
have his choice of a 10” Color
TV or Yorx Mini-Stereo; 2nd
prize winner a choice of a
Soundesign clock radio or
Merlin electronic game; 3rd
prize winner a bowling ball.
Ist grand prize for the state
is a choice of a Panasonic
Home Video recorder or trip
to New Orleans; 2nd grand
prize is a Canon AE-1 Cam
era. In addition, all bowlers
with 10 or more sponsors will
receive a t-shirt.

There are times in life
when we set goals, and do
the best we can and still not
quite get there. There have
been occasions in our lives
when we have failed, and we
know it.
The question we must face
is “how am I going to let it
affect me?” Will you learn
from it and go on to bigger
things or will you let it defeat
you. Failure doesn’t mean
you’re a failure. It does
mean you haven’t succeeded
yet. Failure doesn’t mean
you have accomplished noth
ing. It does mean you have
learned something. Failure
doesn’t mean you are a fool.
It does mean you have a lot
of faith. Failure doesn’t
mean you’ve been dis
graced, it does mean you
were willing to try. Failure
doesn’t mean you don’t have
it. It does mean you have to
do something in a different
way. Failure doesn’t mean
you are inferior. It does
mean you are not perfect.
Failure doesn’t mean you
wasted your life. It does
mean you have a good ex

Fall Courses
A unique Christmas cele
bration emphasizing foreign
missions is planned at the
Georgia Baptist Convention
Center Tuesday evening,
Nov. 24, according to Dr.
James N. Griffith, executive
secretary-treasurer of the
convention.
The observance, beginning
at 8 p.m., will feature the
lighting of the “Great Mis
sion Tree,” music by an or
chestra, several choral
groups, a well-known harpist
and a handbell choir. Dr.
Griffith will be narrator for
the program.
Theme for the program is
“A Light to the World
Christmas with Georgia
to all companies that write
residential insurance in
Georgia, ordering them to
review their underwriting
practices “to make sure they
are living up to both the
letter and the spirit of the
law.”
Caldwell said he scheduled
the hearings “because I
want to hear from the people
who are most likely to be
affected; people who live in
areas like West End, for ex
ample, where they’ve had a
big problem with arson.

Festival Singers
To Open Season
The Festival Singers of
Atlanta, a new cappella cho
ral group making its debut
this season under the direc
tion of J. Marcus Ritchie,
will present its first concert
Sunday evening, Nov. 8, 8
p.m., at St. Anne’s Episcopal
Church.
The twenty-four voice
group rehearses and per
forms with one concept in
mind: to interpret both the
sacred and secular cappella
choral literature with as
much authenticity as possi
ble. This concept is partic
ularly true of the music of
the Renaissance and Ba
roque eras. St. Anne’s
church has been chosen be
cause of its reverberant ac
coustics which approximate
that of many fine churches
Baptists.” Plans for the
event include lighting of a 40-
foot tree and four smaller
trees. Emphasizing the mis
sionary efforts of the Wom
an’s Missionary Union,
auxiliary to the convention,
artifacts and decorations
gathered during the year
from around the world will
be used for decorations.
Musical groups and musi

pate include: the orchestra
of First Baptist Church, At
lanta; youth and handbell
choirs from Briarlake
Church, Decatur; the Jubal
heirs and the Sons of Jubal,
Georgia Baptist Convention

Orchestral music will be
