Deed Books Interesting

Many tilings are recorded
into our early Deed books as
well as deeds. Some of the
interesting facts I have
found there follow.
In 1880, Robert A. Eakes
sold to Ancil Strickland the
house and lot known as the
Green McGuire place. When
John Baldwin died his large
holdings in property, etc.

debts. In 1849, Wilson Evans
sold property to Ira Row
Foster fronting the new road
running out to Foster’s Mill
(this new road is now Pil
grim Mill Road. Arthur Er
win sold land running north
out of town. In 1868, William

brook and Benjamin Kelley
Were Trustees of the Method
ist Church at Diana’s Cha
pel. The Church property
consisted of four acres with
the church in the center. One
deed mentions the Franklin
Gold Pyrite and Power Com
pany of Cherokee County,
jlong after it was supposedly
absorbed by the Creighton
•Mines. John L. Hudson’s
hofheplace in Cumming was
Isold in 1907 to Dewitt Jones.

1. The alley between the Gai
nesville Road and the Dahlo
nega Road ran due east and
west. Alexander W. Johnston
occupied a house as a shoe
and harness shop fronting
the road to Burtz tanyard.
This house was located be
tween the John 0. James
Workshop and John L.
Cruse’s grocery store.
In 1866, the heirs at law of
Josiah Redd of Hall County
sold four 40 acre lots to Mar
cus L. Pool. The heirs named
were Jesse S. Wingo and his
wife Elizabeth, formerly
Red the widow of Josiah,
James Red, Robert C. Wingo
and his wife formerly Mar
tha C. Red and William P.
Garrett and his wife for
merly Judah A. Red. In Hall
County in 1857, Thomas Wil
liams and his wife Rebecca
Williams, formerly the
widow of Moses Lott sold
some of Moses’ property in
Forsyth County. Arthur Er
win sold to J. N. Peutt the
Sawnee Campground lot.
Peter West, a free person of
color, sold through his
guardian Elias Fincher
(husband of Ann East) his
part of the gold mine on
Sawnee Mountain. (Peter
was probably freed by Ann’s
father back in South Caro
lina.) Solomon Brannon
gave a power of attorney to
his brothers Thomas S. and
James C. Brannon on the eve
of moving to Texas in 1866.
Elizabeth Strong was given
from her husband Noah’s
estate one-half interest in
lots 1274 and 1275 and one
half interest in the mill
thereon (later this was Kelly
Mill and was originally Saw
nee’s property I assume
the one-half that Noah
Strong held was originally
Oliver Strickland’s half.)

An Insider’s View
Three-year-old Rob Preston, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. C. B.
Preston Sr. of Cumming, got an insider’s view of the WSB
Radio Traffic-Copter recently. Rob is the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation representative from Gwinnett County, where the
Atlanta Athletic Club will hold a 1982 Super Splash for Cystic
Fibrosis Saturday, July 24. Rob, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Preston of Norcross, is pictured with “Cap’n Dave”
Foulk of WSB Radio. For more information about the Super

tional books. The title came
from the 30th psalm: “Weep

• Southern Discomfort, by

who are students at the Uni
versity of Georgia, have
been named to the school’s
spring quarter dean’s list.
