Unemployment Rate Unchanged
For the past three weeks
the Georgia Department of
Labor has been paying out
more than $5.7 million each
week to about 58,000 jobless
Georgians, Commissioner of
Labor Sam Caldwell said
today.
For the six weeks prior to
that time, State Labor was
paying out more than $6 mil
lion weekly to more than 60,-
000 unemployed people.
“It is a good economic
indicator that the total num
ber of people drawing unem
ployment insurance benefits
has been on a downward

employment insurance
claims have been down for
the past three weeks. Initial
claims register the newly
unemployed, because they
are coming in to sign-up for
jobless benefits for the first
time.”
For the past three weeks
initial claims have been av
eraging about 13,700 each
week. During the six weeks
prior to that initial claims
averaged about 18,000

nor. Also present was Bruce
McCaskill, Forsyth County
Party Chairman and rep
resenting Franklin Sutton,

gather information on any
candidate. Office hours are
from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
daily.

3, state records show that
57,989 Georgians drew $5,-
777,353 in jobless benefits,
compared with 57,767 who
drew $5,747,191 the previous
week.
That same week (ending
Sept. 3) 13,846 people filed
initial claims, up just
slightly from the 13,670 who
filed claims the previous
week. In metro Atlanta, 4,151
people filed initial claims,
down from 4,392 the previous
week.

$90,273,696 more than the
$123,513,391 paid out at this
same time last year.
The jobless benefits are
paid from the state’s trust
fund, the sixth healthiest in
the nation at more than $433
million ($433,018,448.) Only
California, New York, Flor
ida, North Carolina and Mas
sachusetts have more money
in their trust fund than
Georgia.

lowest of the six metro areas
in Georgia. The previous
month the metro Atlanta
area recorded a 6.6.
More than one million peo
ple are employed in the
metro Atlanta area
(1,043,004 in July). And job
lessness in metro Atlanta
dropped by almost 3,000
(2,925) in a month’s time

The latest jobless report
from State Labor shows
Georgia staying at 8.1 per
cent, unchanged from the
previous month. “The good
news has been that we have
bottomed out,’’ Caldwell
said of the state and nation’s
latest prolonged recession,
“but the bad news was that
we have been staying at the
bottom. (The U.S. rate was
9.8 in July and August.)
“Now, all that seems to be
changing. We’re looking up,
moving up, but slowly. ”
