Toastmasters
Plan Contest
The Lanier Toastmasters
Club in Forsyth County is
preparing to participate in a
Humorous Speech Contest,
scheduled to be held in the
next few weeks.
The group meet at the
courthouse here last week,
and heard two speakers, in
addition to having Tabletop
ics with brief impromptu re
sponses to questions.
Members of the group
were asked to do a variety of
activities for one minute,
which included talking to a
babbling brook, untangling
coathangers and initialing
shoe laces.
Following the spontaneous
contributions, the prepared
speeches were presented.
Carl Richter gave his first
Toastmaster speech entitled
“Icebreaker” in which he
told about the history of his
family, which began in Ger
many 150 years ago. He told
of an experience and story of
aristocracy migrating to the
new world and struggling for
a new kind of success.
The second speaker was a
visiting Toastmaster from
the Pershing Point Toast
masters, Atlanta. Jarad Og
den was the winner of his
club’s Humorous Speech
Contest. He shared with the
club experiences which he
entitled, “All you Ever
Wanted To Know About Hav
ing a Baby and Were Afraid
to A5k...0r...A Short Course
on Birthing a Baby from a
Male Chauvanist View
point.” It reaccounted his
trama as his wife had their

A Holiday Sweets
Workshop will be sponsored
by the Cumming Recreation
and Parks Department,
Tuesday, Oct. 12, and Thurs
day, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m.
until noon, at the Kiwanis
building.
All kinds of Holiday can
dies will be demonstrated by
instructor Jackie Collins, in
cluding chocolate Santa’s,
covered bon-bon’s, choco
late-covered cherries, and
mints, just to name a few.

On Friday
The American Association
of Retired Persons (AARP)
will meet for luncheon Fri
day, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m., at

Program, which is spon

Three Named
To Dean’s List
Three local students were
among 475 students at the
University of Georgia to be
named to the summer quar
ter dean’s list.
Mark Phillip Dooley was
earned the honor in the
School of Education, while
Carroll Labron Chambers,
Jr. and Sherry Leigh Norris
received recognition from
the School of Arts and Sci
ences.
Nomination to the dean’s
list means a student has
earned a 3.6 grade point av
erage or higher out of a pos
