Wildcats Down Dawson
The North Forsyth Wild
cats ninth-grade team
scored two first-half touch
downs against Dawson
County last Thursday and
relied on a big-play defense
to make those scores stand
up in a 12-6 victory over the
Tigers in Dawsonville.
The Wildcats stymied
Dawson’s offense by picking
off three errant passes and
recovering two fumbles,
holding the Tigers in check
until late in the game when a
long drive resulted in a 15-
yard scoring pass to prevent
a shutout.
North Forsyth jumped on
top early when running back
Todd Milford scored on an
18-yard touchdown run with
4:38 left in the opening quar
ter. A two-point conversion
attempt failed when the
Wildcats’ pass fell incom
plete.
A Doug Hicks fumble re
covery in the second quarter
gave the Wildcats the ball on
their own 25 and North For
syth proceeded to march the
ball down the field on a drive
highlighted by a 31-yard run
by Brett Shadbum.
On a fourth-down-and-five
play from the nine-yard line,
quarterback Robby Payne
threw a scoring strike to
Chris Mitchell. The Wildcat
lead stood at 12-0 with 1:44
remaining in the half after
the two-point conversion at
tempt failed.
Dawson looked as if it
would make a game of it
when it took the second half
kickoff and moved down the
field to the Wildcat 15. But
Jason Shafer fell on a Tiger
fumble to stop the drive and
frustrate the Wildcat oppo
nents.
The Wildcats ended the
game with 151 yards of total
offense. Milford was the
game’s leading rusher with
48 yards, while Shadbum
was not too far behind with
42. Payne completed one of
five passes for nine yards,
while Travis Harbin, who
started the game at quar
terback, was one-for-two for
15 yards.
Milford was also the de
fensive leader of the af
ternoon, intercepting one
pass and getting in on 14
tackles while Hicks and
Shadbum (one interception,
also) were each in on nine
defensive stops for the Wild
cats. Dwayne Gooden
grabbed the Wildcats’ third
interception of the af
ternoon.
The next game for North
Forsyth’s ninth grade team
will be Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
at North Hall. The game will
be preceeded by the seventh
and eighth grade matchup of
the two teams, slated to be
gin at 5 p.m.
South Loses First
South Forsyth mounted a
furious last-minute drive in
an attempt to salvage a tie
with North Hall in last
Thursday’s game between

but players and coaches
watched helplessly as time
expired with the Gators on
the Trojan 10-yard line.
Trailing 16-8, the Gator
defense forced North Hall to
punt the ball away with only
46 seconds remaining in the
game. South Forsyth took
over the ball on its own 25
and managed to drive 65
yards to the Trojan 10 before
time ran out, ending the Ga
tor threat.
“If we had had just a few
more seconds, I feel we
would have moved the ball
on in for the scored. Then we
would have had an opportu
nity to tie the game with a
two-point attempt.”
Early in the second quar
ter, after a scoreless first
quarter, South Forsyth
opened the game’s scoring
on an 18-yard touchdown
pass from Kelly Curl to
Steve Darnell. The scoring
toss was set up by a 59-yard
run by Curl, the Gator’s of
fensive leader on the af
ternoon.
Darnell also pulled in
Curl’s pass on the two-point
conversion as the Gators
took an 8-0 lead.
But North Hall came back
to tie the game late in the
half on an eight-play, 47-yard
drive resulting in a touch
down and a successful con
version pass.
North Hall took advantage
of a Gator mistake when, on
the last play of the third
quarter, the Trojans recov
ered a fumbled punt on the
South Forsyth. The Gators
came close to making a tre
mendous goal line stand as
they turned a first-and-goal
situation on the two-yard line
into a fourth-and-goal situa
tion from the ten.
But the Trojan quar
terback found his tight end
open on a release pattern,
and the successful conver
sion gave North Hall its final
margin of victory.
On the afternoon, Curl
rushed for 63 yards in two
carries and passed for 169
yards, completing 13 of 16
attempts. Steve Darnell led
the team in receptions with
six, while Jon Faircloth
pulled down four passes.
The next game for South
Forsyth will be Thursday at
5:30 p.m. when the Cherokee
Warriors travel to Cumming
to face the Gator ninth grad
ers.
7th & Bth Gators Lose
Like its ninth-grade coun
terpart, South Forsyth’s sev
enth and eighth grade team
fell victim to the clock last
Thursday in its game
against North Hall, losing
the game by a narrow 6-0
margin.
With 3:45 remaining in the
game, the Gators took over
the ball on their own five
yard line and drove the ball
deep into Trojan territory
with time winding down. But
the comeback bid fell short
when Trojan defenders
brought down a Gator back
