Tips On Grooming And
Bathing Your Pets
By Tracy Whittaker
Forsyth County
Humane Society
Here are some bathing tips
that professional groomers
use to help you care for your
best friend.
• Before you start, put
some cotton in your dog’s
ears. If you get water in the
ears, it can cause an infec
tion, and it’s almost impossi
ble not to get some water in
there, especially if your dog
is the uncooperative type.
• If your dog has long hair,
be sure to comb it out before
you begin. Water and soap
only make tangles worse.
Cream rinse won’t work. It’s
almost impossible to get a
tangled dog clean, or to rinse
all the soap out of matted
hair.
• Wash your dog in the sink
or bathtub. No one wants a
bath in ice cold water from
the garden hose, and your
dog is no dirtier than your
teenage son. You can scrub
the tub when you’re done,
and it will be cleaner than
when you started.
• Be sure to rinse all the
soap out. Leaving a little on
your dog’s skin can cause
Women Can Benefit
From Lifting Weights
DR JOHN EARL RABER
North Georgia College
Without beating around
the bush, the question is this:
Should women, athletic or
not, lift weights?
One woman, to whom I
suggested weightlifting, just
smiled at me and said, “No
thanks. I just couldn’t see or
appreciate myself with big
arms and a thick neck. Be
sides, I doubt if it would do
much for my sex appeal.”
She added that if she became
too strong, she was afraid
she might start pushing her
husband around.
In actuality, some of what
she says is true. She may get
strong enough to push her

rashes and itching and will

• Dry your dog with a
white towel. That way, you
can be sure he’s clean.
• Here’s a special tech
nique for getting rid of fleas.
Get a good flea dip and put it
into a spray bottle, an empty
Windex bottle, for example.
Wet the dog’s head, face
and ears first, because when
fleas feel water, they climb
up to these areas. Put your
hand firmly over your dog’s
eyes and spray his head,
ears and face. Then wet the
rest of the dog, squeeze out
excess water, and spray his
whole body generously with
the dip. Then wash, working
the dip in as you wash. Rinse
the dog thoroughly and towel
dry.
Spray him again all over
with dip, being sure not to
miss any spots, like the belly
and armpits. Let him air
dry, as blow drying seems to
lessen the effectiveness of
the dip. When he’s dry, spray
him again to help keep the
fleas off. An added bonus is
that now you can use your
dip as flea spray. It’s less
expensive and works just as
well.
husband around, but if a
woman is interested in de
veloping her figure, there is
no faster way than through
weightlifting.
Recent studies have shown
that because of the chemical
makeup of the female, she
can shape up, and become
stronger, but she will not
increase her muscle size
when training with weights.
A new concept of weight
lifting for women is now be
ing tested by the National
Athletic Institute in Ingle
wood, California. Physicians
and exercise physiologists
there are convinced that
weight training can increase

This One Finds A Home
“Bullet”, a male, tri-colored collie mix, got lucky Saturday
and found a home. He was adopted during the Forsyth
County Humane Society’s adoption center. Many other dogs
and cats, puppies and kittens can be adopted for a $35
adoption fee, which includes a spaying certificate, shots and
medical attention. For more information, call the society at

building women into Am

an ideal way to exercise and
get into shape.
Dr. Jack H. Wilmore, an
exercise physiologist and ex

that women have increased
upper body strength by as
much as 44 percent through
weightlifting, without in

Therefore, go at it in a pro

Hunt And Fish
Day Is Planned
The 11th annual obser
vance of Hunting and Fish
ing Day in Georgia will be
held on Saturday, Sept. 25.
The theme for this year’s
Hunting and Fishing Day,
“Pass It On,” urges the
state’s 1.5 million hunters
and fishermen to help pass
on the outdoor tradition to
the millions of young people
and adults who have never
had the opportunity to expe
rience the outdoors as they
have.
Only by making millions of
non-sportsmen aware of the
need for conservation and of
the contributions that hunt
ers and fishermen make to
conservation, can Hunting
and Fishing Day sponsors
help ensure a healthy future
for the outdoors, wildlife and
the sports they enjoy.
Booze Ad
Ban Continues
State Revenue Commis
sioner Bill Strickland has
made the decision to con
tinue in force a regulation
banning outdoor advertising
of distilled spirits.
The commissioner con
cluded that, “there is no
ground swell of public opin
ion in favor of abolishing the
regulation.”
The decision was reached
following a study of testi
mony taken at a public hear
ing on the regulation and
written and telephoned re
sponses from the public and
various organizations.
Commissioner Strickland
said a tally of letters and
telephone calls received by
the Georgia Department of
Revenue showed “over
whelming opposition to the
lifting of the ban.” The let
ters and calls were 13-to-l
against the ban erasure.
He noted that the only sup
port for removal of the regu
lation came from outdoor
advertising firms and from
officials of some states that

In a proclamation from
Gov. George Busbee, the ef
forts of the hunter and fish
erman toward wildlife
conservation were cited.
Among these is a self-im
posed 11 percent tax on all
hunting equipment as a
method of funding wildlife
projects.
Schools and youth organi
zations are urged to join in
the celebration of the day by
inviting members of local
conservation groups or hunt
ing clubs to discuss their
roles in conservation.
In his proclamation, Bus
bee called “upon all our citi

allow outdoor advertising of
liquor products. One outdoor
advertising firm, in a letter
to the Revenue Department,
expressed reservations
about lifting the ban because
of public sentiment.
Among those opposing the
lifting of the regulation were
representatives of the Gar
den Club of Georgia, Inc.,
the Georgia Alcohol Dealers
Associaton, the Georgia
Package Stores Institute,
Inc., and many church
groups.
At the public hearing, held
on July 27 in Atlanta, rep
resentatives of outdoor ad
vertising firms argued that
they should be allowed to
advertise liquor products on
billboards similar to adver
tising carried in newspa
pers, magazines and other
publications.
Regulation of advertising
for liquor products is vested
solely with the state revenue
commissioner by the
Georgia General Assembly.
