October Adopt-A-Dog Month
For years, dog’s have been
dubbed as “man’s best
friend”, and they serve as
loving companions in over
half the nations household.
Despite their status as
America’s favorite pet how
ever, more than 13 million
dogs are left homeless each
year, and must be taken to
humane societies across the
U.S.A. Unfortunately, due to
the large number of home

The Outstanding Young
Fire Safety
Month Is
Proclaimed
October is Fire Prevention
Month in Georgia, and
Safety Fire Commissioner
Johnnie Caldwell urges
Georgians to take a little
time during the month to
make sure their homes are
reasonably safe.
“Statistics indicate that
over 200 Georgians will die in
fires in 1982, and about 80
percent of these fatalities
will occur in private
homes,” Caldwell said. “A
few precautions and a little
planning could save a lot of
lives in Georgia this year.”
Caldwell offered the fol
lowing fire safety sugges
tions:
-A smoke detector, in
stalled in a hallway near
bedrooms, can alert sleeping
family members to a fire
and give them time to es
cape. Most fire deaths occur
between midnight and 4 a.m.
-Smoking is a major cause
of house fires. Never smoke
in bed, and keep matches
and lighters away from chil
dren.
-Heating and cooking
equipment can both be fire
hazards. Exercise caution
when cooking. Have fur
nances and fireplaces in
spected in the fall before the
home heating season begins.
Also, be especially careful
when using portable ker
osene heaters. Always follow
the manufacturer’s instruc
tions for refueling and mov
ing the heaters.
-Each household should
have a well-rehearsed fam
ily escape plan. All rooms,
especially bedrooms, should
have two escape routes. Plan
to exit the house immedi
ately after fire isdiscovered.
