Ponds Can Serve A
Variety Of Purposes
SOIL CONSERVATION
SERVICE
The demand for water has
increased tremendously in
recent years and for eco
nomical sources of water.
Ponds are now serving a
variety of purposes, includ
ing water for livestock, for
irrigation, fish production,
field orchard spraying, fire
protection, energy conserva
tion, wildlife habitat, recre
ation and landscape
improvement.
Some of those who have
built ponds in 1981 and 1982
include William Vaughn,
John A. Record, John L.
Shirley and Lynn Chastain.
E.D. Densmore built a dam
that will impound water for a
hog lagoon.
Soil Testing Is
Almost A Must
By WM. CLARK BEUSSE
County Extension Agent
The purpose of soil testing
is to determine the ability of
the soil to supply crop nutri
ents. This information is
then used in making ferti
lizer recommendations. It is
also used to determine the
soil pH so that limestone
recommendations can be de
veloped.
In order to be useful, the
soil sample must be taken so
that it is a “representative
sample.” In other words, it
must accurately represent
the field or area sampled so
that we obtain reliable soil
test results. These results
are the key to accurate ferti
lizer and limestone recom
mendations.
Sampling the lawn or field
to be tested is the weakest
link in the soil testing chain.
Taking the sample has the
greatest source of error.

All of this is in accord with
the Georgia Safe Dam Act.
The Georgia Health Depart

from the local health depart

Fifteen applications are on

the district to build at a fu

There can be a tremendous
variability in soils across the
land, usually, even in those
that look uniform.
An acre of soil to a depth of
seven inches weighs about 2
million pounds. Yet, from
each soil sample you take,
less than one ounce is used in
various lab tests. This puts
tremendous importance on
that small quantity of soil
being a good average rep
resentation of the area sam
pled.
The soil sample should be
mailed by the local county
extension service office to
the University of Georgia
Soil Testing Lab. At the soil
lab the sample is tested and
the results of the tests will be
sent back to you.
There is no cost for a rou
tine soil test and soil sample
bags may be picked up at the
Forsyth County Extension
Service office in Cumming.

Timber Harvest Boosts Economy

prise a $6.6 billion Georgia
industry that employs an es

The timber harvest of 879
million cubic feet is valued
at $292 million standing on
the stump. For every dollar
of these timber sales,
Georgia’s forest product
manufacturers created final
wood products worth more
than $lO, three-fourths of
which are exported to na

For every dollar of income
received by Georgia’s tim
berland owners for their
stumpage, nearly six times
as much income is earned by
other Georgians in the subse
quent transport, processing
and marketing of the timber
harvest.
Much of this income is
earned in Georgia’s large

becoming more so. In the
