Lions Club Donates
$4,000 For 911 System
“lt’s the biggest thing we
could do to help the entire
county,” William Hughes
said, referring to a $4,000
donation by the Forsyth
County Lions Club, to help
upgrade an emergency
phone system now being in
stalled in the sheriff’s de
partment.
Thanks to the Lions Club,
Forsyth County’s new “911”
emergency phone system
will now be accompanied by
a communications retrieval
system, which will record
the radio and telephone con
versations of the county’s
emergency services. Emer
gency calls which are un
clear, can now be played
back.
The Lions Club made the
donation after a presentation
by Sheriff Wesley Walraven,
Fire Chief Jake Moore and
George Ingram, with the
Forsyth County Ambulance
Service. Walraven had ex
pected to purchase only a
three-channel recorder, but
arrangements were made
for the purchase of a 20-
channel recording system.
The main purpose of the sys
tem, Walraven says, is to
make sure that all emer
gency traffic is properly
handled or recorded.
Walraven said that the re
corder will be used to record
six phone lines, and the
emergency frequencies of
the county’s two law-en
forcement agencies, the fire

When asked what he felt
would aid the state’s econ

must attract “good, clean

tax base. He also pointed to
Gov. Busbee’s worldwide
search for industry as an
example.
Barnett feels his experi
ence as a Forsyth County
commissioner will be benefi

the legislature. “First, I
knew a lot of people I
wouldn’t otherwise have
known,” he said, “and I

department and the ambu
lance service. Large reels on
the recorder can tape 24
hours of communications,
before it becomes necessary
to switch to another reel. The
sheriff said the machine will
record 24 hours per day,
seven days a week.
The most outstanding fea
ture of the machine is its
ability to rewind to a specific
time, and play back the com
munications which occurred
at that time.
Individuals calling in
emergencies sometimes
panic, very hurriedly pro
vide directions to an acci
dent scene, and then hang
up, before the dispatcher has
a chance to clarify those
directions. Now, the time
when the message was re
corded can quickly be
punched into the machine,
which will return to that spe
cific time location at 650
times its normal speed. The
message can then be played
back, and the directions can
be clarified.
The machine can also play
back telephone conversa
tions which are handled
courteously, to prevent the
emergency services from re
ceiving undue complaints.
By recording the call, in
structions from the dis
patcher and the emergency
service response, the sher
iff’s department can prove
that proper directions were
given. This prevents crit

that no pay increase would occur with
the creation of the new position.

possible legal action against
the emergency services.
A safe scan system is also
built into the recorder, which
detects problems on any
channel, and provides an
alarm, and the number of
the channel which has failed
to record properly.
The 64 Lions Club mem
bers raise money each year
through concession sales at
Lanierland Music Park, and
through other fundraising
projects.
“It’s reassuring to see
members of the community
giving their time and efforts
to provide more and better
emergency equipment, to as
sist those in need of emer
gency services,” Walraven
said. “The unselfish efforts
of the Lions Club makes us
all aware that the people of
the community are its most
valuable assets.”

No Register, No Vote
Time is running out for
unregistered voters who
wish to participate in the
1982 General Election. The
deadline for registration is
Monday, Oct. 4. The General
Election is scheduled for
Nov. 2.
Forsyth County Voter Reg
istrar Janice Thomas said
that “quite a few people”
have registered to vote since
July 12, which was the regis
tration deadline for the Gen
eral Primary. She added,
however, that voter registra
tion was still very slow.
Registration before the
July 12 deadline increased
Forsyth County’s total of
registered voters to 12,367.
Only 42 percent of those vot
ers cast ballots in the pri
mary, while 45 percent voted
in the Aug. 31 runoff.
Since turnout for the pri
mary and runoff was below
50 percent, a large number
of voters may not be sure if
they’re registered to vote.
Many individuals, according
to Mrs. Thomas, aren’t sure
if they’re registered, and
find out too late to vote in
elections. She added that
anyone not sure of their reg
istration is invited to call or
come by the registrar’s of
fice, to confirm their regis
tration.
Adding to the importance
of this year’s election is the
race for Governor of
Georgia. Republican candi
date Bob Bell will face Joe
Frank Harris, who defeated
fellow democrat Bo Ginn in
the runoff.
Ninth District Congress
man Ed Jenkins, a demo
crat, will face republican
challenger Charles Sher
wood in the General Elec
tion.
The race for the Post 1 and
3 seats on the Forsyth
County Board of Commis
sioners will also be decided
in November. In the Post 1
race, democratic winner
Jack Shoemake will face re
publican candidate Bass
Farr, who ran without oppo
sition in the primary. Repub
lican candidate Reno Ivy,
who also ran without opposi
tion in the primary, will
