Fire Station Of The Month
-*
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Forsyth County Volunteer Fire Department,
The News is featuring one of the county’s community fire stations each month. This month,
Station 7 is featured. Station 7 was built in October of 1973, and serves the Silver City and
Crossroads communities, and the north Coal Mountain area. It has 40 members, which
according to Darle Hall, captain, is one of the largest memberships of any station in Forsyth
County. Hall says Station 7 doesn’t spend very much money, and has not held a fundraiser id
about three years. The membership is now in the process of adding an office to the station,
and repainting the inside and outside of the building. Hall says Station 7 was built on two
consecutive Saturdays. The walls were built on one Saturday, he adds, and station members
built the roof and fought two fires on the next Saturday. Hall says that as many as 45 people
helped to build the roof. Station 7 is equipped with a 1962 Ford pumper and tanker. The
pumper can transfer 1,000 gallons per minute, while the tanker has a capacity of 2,500 gallons.
The station has two lieutenants. Tony Hamby serves as day lieutenant, and Lonald Holtzclaw
serves as night lieutenant. Steve Benson serves as representative for the station’s board of
directors. Hall says the station has three Emergency Medical Technicians, and 12 firemen
who have taken the basic 101 fire training course.
