Group Eyes Emergency Problems
By CHUCK THOMPSON
News Editor
Each time a fire or acci
dent occurs, the loss of only a
few minutes can mean ex
tensive property damage, or
loss of life for the victim.
The Forsyth County Emer
gency Services Coordinating
Committee is working to
identify and correct three
types of problems which
could increase the time
needed to respond to local
emergencies. The commit
tee viewed the problems dur
ing its regular monthly
meeting on Tuesday, Sept.
21.
The three problems which
the committee hopes to iden
tify are:
(1) Roads not on the
county road map.
(2) Road names that have
been duplicated
(3) Roads where a marker
is not in place.
Identification of those
problems is being done in
connection with the devel
opment of a county road di
rectory, to insure that the
directory is as accurate as
possible.
Donald Glover, chairman
of the committee, said the
directory will allow emer
gency services to reach an
accident scene with a mini
mal delay, even when com
plete directions may not
have been provided by the
individual reporting the ac
cident.
The Forsyth County Volun
teer Fire Department is be
ing cooperative in efforts to
develop the directory,
Glover said. Since Forsyth
County is divided among 12
community fire stations, the
county’s firemen are very
familiar with roads in their
station’s coverage area.
Glover said each station
will verify roads in its dis
trict, verify former road
names and point out any
mistakes it finds on the cur
rent county map.
According to the chair
man, individuals in the
county are being asked to
learn official road names,
and to use those official
names in any communica
tion with the emergency
SSOO Added
To Reward
Fund Here
Another SSOO was added
last week to a reward for
information leading to the
arrest of the person, or per
sons responsible for distrib
uting unsigned political
cartoons prior to the Aug. 31
runoff.
The reward is now up to
$5,200, and has increased by
$1,700 in the last three
weeks.
The cartoons were circu
lated in Forsyth County as
early as three days before
the runoff, and made deroga
tive remarks about some
public officials, candidates
in the runoff and individuals
not holding public office.
According to Cumming
Police Chief Gabe Dukas,
the cartoons are in violation
of state laws, which requare
that such materials be
signed by the individual or
individuals responsible for
them.
The Cumming Police De
partment and the Georgia
Bureau of Investigation are
working to determine from
where the cartoons origi
nated, and how they were
distributed.
Cumming
Man Faces
10 Charges
A 28-year-old Cumming
man has been arrested by
Forsyth County authorities
and charged with ten counts
of first-degree forgery.
Sheriff Wesley Walraven
identified the man as Wil
liam Dale Mann, age 28, of
Cumming. Mann is accused
of passing ten forged checks
totalling approximately SSOO
to several local convenience
stores over a four-day period
during August.
He is currently being held
in the Forsyth County jail,
under SIO,OOO bond.
FIGHT MILDEW
Has the wet summer
caused mildewed shower
curtains? If a curtain is plas
tic and colorfast, put it in the
washing machine with warm
sudsy water and agitate for
about three minutes. Then
rinse and let it spin on a
gentle cycle and shake out
the excess water. Hang it
back up to dry.
services. “The purpose of
these studies is not to upset
any traditional road names,
or make any changes not
absolutely necessary,” he
said. “Sometimes road
names are changed out of
necessity. What we’re after
is to try to close any loop
holes that might possibly
cause delays in our emer
gency services getting to
fires or victims.”

the committee on a partic

THE FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS—WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1982-
The committee also has
acquired samples of stan
dard operating procedures
for certain types of emergen
cies, which were distributed
to each emergency service.
The purpose of acquiring the
procedures, Glover said,
was to make sure that every
emergency service knows
exactly what its duties are,
in relation to other services.
He added that no “step-by
step” procedure for handling
emergencies in Forsyth
County has been developed.

CLICKING DENTURES
Q: I have a friend whose new set of teeth make a clicking
noise. Whot causes that?
A: Perhaps your friend's teeth are loose and pop up, causing
them to hit against each other. More likely, especially since
they're new, they may be alittle too tall for her mouth, so she
doesn't have enough space to speak without them hitting
together.
Q: My old dentures look brand new, but the front teeth seem
to have gotten shorter. How is that possible?
A: What probably has happened is thct the underlying bone
has worn down from the pressure of chewing, causing the den
ture to settle further against the bony ridges, with a shorter
appearance of the front teeth. You need a new denture.
