Record Shutouts
The South Forsyth Gators
squared off against the
North Forsyth Wildcats at
Forsyth County Stadium last
Thursday in the first seventh
and eighth grade game be
tween two intracounty rivals
this year. The Gators took a
step toward the county
championship by effectively
shutting down the Wildcat
offense and took advantage
of two North Forsyth turn
overs on the way to a 20-0
victory.
The Gator defense stymied
the Wildcats offensively all
afternoon, keeping North
Forsyth in poor field posi
tion, while the offense rolled
up 203 total yards, many of
those yards coining via the
pass.
In the first quarter, Lance
McGinnis intercepted a
Wildcat pass and raced 37
yards for the game’s first
touchdown. Quarterback
Randy Nickelson reached
the end zone on a sweep for
the two-point conversion to
give the Gators an 8-0 lead.
Nickelson found tight end
Eli Belich open in the second
quarter and hit him with a
39-yard scoring strike to
push the Gator lead to 14-0.
The South Forsyth defense
scored again in the third
period when J.V. Mulligan
recovered a fumble by the
Wildcats’ quarterback in the
end zone for a touchdown.
The conversion attempt was
no good, and the Gators
closed out the scoring with a
2(H) lead.
On Saturday, the Otwell
Bullpups managed to do
what no other Forsyth
County team had been able
to do this year defeat the
North Hall Trojans. The Bul
lpups pulled off the feat by a
20-0 score, racking up an
impressive 300 yards total
offense and playing solid de
fense to earn the victory.
Earlier in the year, North
Hall defeated South Forsyth
by a 6-0 score and downed
North Forsyth by a 26-6 mar
gin.
Darrin Sams scored the
Bullpups first touchdown
midway through the first
quarter on a 32-yard run to

give Otwell a 6-0 lead. For
the game, Sams rushed for
70 yards on six carries
against the Trojans.
On the following posses
sion, North Hall appeared to
have scored the tying touch
down, but a clipping penalty
called the play back and
Richie Pirkle intercepted a
Trojan pass on the next play
to end the threat.
In the second quarter, the
Bullpups drove to the North
Hall three-yard line and
seemed about to score again
when a fumble ruined the
opportunity. The teams went
into the half with the score
still 6-0.
On the opening possession
of the second half, North
Hall again had apparently
knotted the score on a touch
down pass, but a motion call
on the Trojan offense cost
them the score, and the Bul
lpup defense held the Tro
jans on fourth down to end
the drive.
But North Hall returned
the favor later in the quar
ter, holding the Bullpups on
a fourth-and-goal play on the
two-yard line. The Trojans
took over the ball deep in
their own territory and
promptly fumbled, with Pre
ston Estes coming up with
the recovery on the 11.
Estes, who rushed for 122,
yards on the afternoon,
scored the touchdown from
one-yard out with two min
utes left in the game to in
crease the lead to 12-0.
The Trojans took the ensu
ing kickoff and quickly drove
down the field. But Sams
stifled the last-ditch scoring
attempt by intercepting a
pass on the four-yard line
and returning it 96 yards for
a touchdown and undoubt
edly an Otwell record. Quar
terback Tim Halyak ran for
the two-point conversion to
give the Bullpups their final
victory margin.
In addition to Estes’ and
Sams’ rushing totals, Ricky
Tanner ran the ball seven
times for 76 yards. That
same trio led the team de
fensively as Sams totaled
seven tackles, Estes six and
Tanner five.

Bullpups Rush Past Trojans
The scoreboard at Forsyth
County Stadium got a big
workout last Saturday night
as a total of 70 points were
scored in the Otwell Bul
lpups’ 42-28 vicotry over the
North Hall Trojans.
The Bullpups rolled up an
awesome total of 412 yards
for the game, all of -it
coming on the ground. Louie
Garcia rushed for two touch
downs in the offensive show
down, carrying the ball a
total of 13 times for 181
yards. Garcia scored a third
touchdown late in the game
on a 30-yard interception re
turn.
Filling in for an injured
Lee Mize, Duane Shook also
had two rushing touchdowns
in route to a 174-yard perfor
mance. Mize, who left the
game late in the first half
with a back injury, ac
counted for 37 yards and one
touchdown.
The two teams exchanged
scores for three quarters of
the game, resulting in a 20-20
tie heading into the fourth
quarter. But on the first play
of the final stanza, Garcia
took a pitch from quar
terback Glenn Sutko and
headed right. Seeing no run
ning room there, the running
back cut back, skirted
around the left end and out
raced Trojan defenders to
the end zone for a 35-yard
touchdown.
Shook scored on the two
point conversion to give Ot
well a 28-20 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Mi
chael Holbrook and Michael
Pugh recovered a North Hall
fumble at midfield. Two
plays later, Shook scored his
second touchdown on a 43-
yard sweep play. Sutko
passed to Kevin Redd for the
conversion to push the Bul
lpup lead to 36-20 with 8:38
left.

on its next possession and
closed its deficit to 36-28 on a
two-yard run and two-point
conversion with five minutes
remaining.
Effectively using the
clock, the Bullpups moved
the ball to the Trojan five
yard line, but came up short
on a fourth-and-goal play,
turning the ball back over to
North Hall with less than a
minute in the game.
But a desperation pass by
the Trojans’ quarterback
was intercepted by Garcia
and returned for a touch
down to give the Bullpups
the final margin of victory.
Otwell had taken an 8-0
lead late in the first quarter
on a five-yard touchdown
run around left end by Mize.
Mize ran the same play to
the right side for the conver
sion. The score was set up by
a blocked punt by the Bul
lpups’ Steve Payne.
North Hall pulled to within
two points on its next posses
sion, scoring on a 15-yard,
fourth-down pass to Richard
Schandera, who proved to be
a thorn in the Bullpups’ side
all night long.
The next two Bullpup
touchdowns came on tre
mendous individual efforts
by Garcia and Shook. With
6:21 remaining in the half,
Garcia hit paydirt from 42
yards out, on a run in which
he evaded several Trojan
defenders by cutting back
and forth across the field.
The Bullpup lead was 14-6 at
that point.
Midway through the third
quarter, it was Shook’s turn,
as the running back broke
tackle after tackle in route to
a 33-yard touchdown run that
gave the Bullpups a 20-14
lead.
Defensively, the Bullpups
were led by Garcia, who was
in on an amazing total of 18
tackles. Shook, the team’s
second leading tackier was
in on seven. Bullpup coach
Loy Day also commended
the defensive play of Lee
Jarvis against the Trojans.
Saturday’s win gave Ot
well a record of 2-0-1. The
Bullpups will take that re
cord into Saturday’s game
against the South Forsyth
Gators in Forsyth County
Stadium.
North Loses Third
The North Forsyth Wild
cats traveled to East Hall
last Thursday in search of
their second victory of the
season, but instead came
back with a 22-8 loss.
After a scoreless first
quarter, East Hall assumed
a 6-0 lead on a 45-yard touch
down pass on the first play of
the second quarter. A two
point conversion gave East
Hall an 8-0 lead.
After a Todd Milford
blocked punt later in the
quarter, the Wildcats found
themselves in a position to
tie the game with a first
down on the Trojan four
yard line. But East Hall held
the Wildcats on a fourth-and
one play to maintain the
lead.
In the third period, East
Hall scored again, following
a 50-yard passing play that
moved the ball deep into
North Forsyth territory. The
conversion kick pushed the
Wildcat deficit to 15-0.
After a fourth quarter
score gave East Hall a 22-0
lead, North Forsyth scored
its only touchdown of the
game on a one-yard quar
terback sneak by Robby
Payne. The score capped a
60-yard drive by the Wild
cats, highlighted by pass re
ceptions by Ryan Williams
and Chip Mann. Milford ran
the two-point conversion in
to end the Wildcats’ scoring
and make the final 22-8.
