Keep Dams Working
SOIL CONSERVATION
SERVICE
The local district supervi
sors of the Upper Chattahoo
chee River Soil and Water
Conservation District have
said that operation and
maintenance is an annual
affair for the 17 flood retard
ing dams in the Etowah
River and the Settingdown
Creek watersheds. In fact
the dams are being checked
quarterly for operation and
maintenance.
Several of the dams have
woody growth on the slopes
that should be removed be
fore bad weather begins. The
woody growth tends tends to
weaken the dam. The owners

should make every effort to
remove this woody growth.
The fisherman who use these
lakes should assist in helping
the owners remove the
woody growth. A working
day would be most helpful.
We know these dams are
holding back many tons of
soil per year that could have
washed into the Gulf of Mex
ico. Let’s keep Forsyth’s soil
in Forsyth County.

Coping With Late
Season Weather
Growers should consult
daily agricultural weather
advisories and be ready to
take full advantage of any
open weather.
Farmers have already
planted, or will be planting
small grains, winter pas
tures and cover crops. Wet
weather may cause some
planting delays, but can pro
vide improved topsoil mois
ture and increased
germination rates.
Late season pest control is
very important. Wetter
than-normal conditions, like
those experienced all year
long, can hinder pest control
programs.
Heat stress on livestock
and poultry should now be
declining. Some periods of

Computers Aid Farmers
COUNTY EXTENSION
DIRECTOR
There’s something new
down on the farm. Computer
technology is breaking into
almost every area of farm
management, from budget
and record keeping to mar
ket and financial planning.
An estimated 75 percent of
all mid-size farmers will be
using computers to maintain
at least a portion of their
records by the end of the
decade, surveys show.
A “Farm Computer
News” survey reveals to
day’s farmer uses computer
hardware mainly for finan
cial, crop, livestock and ac
counting records. The
machines increase effi
ciency and reduce the time
needed to make decisions.
Those are also goals of the
Sunbelt Agricultural Exposi-
prune heavily. It is accepta
ble to remove a few stray
limbs in the early fall; how
ever, severe pruning should
be delayed until a few weeks
before growth is expected in
the spring. Heavy fall prun
ing can result in the produc
tion of tender growth that
will be killed by an early
spring, encourage the great
est number of bud “breaks”
and will result in the least
possibility of plant injury.

service to you.
heat stress may continue,
and producers will need to be
ready to use hot weather
management practices.

The addition of a computer

sive agri-computer trend.
