Competing Is Work, But It’s Fun
By BEN BAGWELL
In my point of view, the
most important part of 4-H is
giving demonstrations and
competing in a project. I’m
not saying the other things
that 4-H has to offer isn’t
good, in fact most of the
other activities are much
more fun. It is just that giv
ing a demonstration is prob
ably the main thing and first
thing you do in 4-H club
work. Demonstrations help
build self-confidence, public
speaking skills, and a little
knowledge.
By now most of you may
be asking, “What is a dem
onstration” Well, first you
pick a project, such as Fruits
and Vegetables. Then you
pick a topic from that pro
ject to give your demonstra
tion on, such as “Training
Young Apple Trees”.
It’s not easy giving a dem
onstration. It takes a lot of
hard work and determin
ation to do a good job. But
after you have selected a
good project you compete at
County Project Achieve
ment.
However, there is a catch
for Junior and Senior 4-
H’ers, you have to complete
a recordbook about the
things you did in your pro
jects and other activities for
that year. A recordbook can
also show if you are saving
money by growing and sell-

ing your own apples rather
than buying them. Record
books are not fun to do but
sometimes it can pay off and
show you how much work
you have done.
So after you’ve put your
demonstration together, you
compete at County Project
Achievement. You are
graded 50 percent on your
demonstrations and 50 per
cent on your recordbook;

you win at C.P.A., you next
get to compete at District
Project Achievement. This
is where all of your hard
work begins to pay off.
District Project Achieve

than at county competition.
But if you have a little confi
dence and a good demonstra

of winning D.P.A. as it is

its horrible breakfast. Most
of the time D.P.A. for Ju
niors and Seniors is held in
March, and for Cloverleafs
is held in June. D.P.A. is a
fun thing to go to even if you
don’t win and most people
will say it was still worth the
work. However, if you do win
for Seniors this is where your
hard work starts paying off.
You see now you get to move
up the ladder to state compe
tition.
I was lucky enough to get

to go to state this year, and it
was the most fun and best
thing I’ve ever gone to in the
4-H Club. It is held each year
at the Marriott Hotel in
downtown Atlanta. You stay
for 4 days and 3 nights and
have the best time of your
life. After you check into
your room, you have to go to
the banquets and probably
one meeting. After that most
of your time is free time.
Your state competition is
really tough, and you have to

be on your toes to win here.
Most of the time you go over
and over your demonstration
until it’s time for your com
petition. After you’ve done
your demonstration you are
really relieved and the pres
sures are off of you. But now
you must wait and see how
you did.
They announce the win
ners at the State Capital and
the Governor makes a brief
speech. Then you go back to
the hotel, put on your best
suit and go to the last ban
quet. After that there is a
costume party and dance
which is very fun. They give
prizes for the best costumes.
After that you wake up the
next morning at about 10 a.m
pack your bags and leave the
hotel before noon. Unfortu
nately we had to leave at
around 8 a.m.
After State competition,
that is if you were lucky
enough to win, you go on to
National competition. Na
tional competition is held in
Chicago, 111. If you win there
you will receive a SI,OOO
scholarship.
After you have won state
and gone to National compe
tition, you can hang up your
demonstration, as you can’t
compete anymore. Project
work is a lot of hard work,
but if you make it to the top
of the ladder it is all worth it!
