Probationers Helping
Elderly And Disabled
By CHUCK THOMPSON
News Editor
Forsyth County’s elderly
and disabled are finding a
new source of help from the
Intensive Probation Supervi
sion (IPS) program. The ob
jective of the program is to
keep marginal risk offenders
out of prison and in commu
nities where they can make
important contributions
while building a future for
themselves.
IPS involves the use of a
two-man team, which is re
sponsible for only 25 proba
tioners. Regular probation
officers in Forsyth County
have an average caseload of
173.
The state requires that 132
hours of community service
work be completed by the
probationers, two of which
are meeting that require
ment on Saturdays”at The
Place in Cumming.
The Place provides aid to
low-income families in the
area. It is staffed by a large
number of volunteers, and

Net farm income earned

This was well above the re

Sister June Racicot de
scribed the two probationers

Sister Racicot said one of
the probationers has cut

has difficulty reaching out

Next Saturday, the proba

Last Saturday, the proba

Sister Racicot said the pro

Before the arrival of the

The city of Cumming will

At its last meeting, the
Cumming City Council be

Appointed as city registrar

cial Circuit alone. The sav
ings generated by all 13
teams, is estimated at
$2,000,000.
Aside from community
service work, the probation
ers are required to meet a 10
p.m. curfew, and are prohib
ited any use of alcohol or
drugs. They are also re
quired to find a job, and pay
monthly fees, designed to
cover the cost of their proba
tion.
Bill Mundy, who heads the
IPS probation team, says the
main advantage of the pro
gram is its size. “It’s on a
person-to-person basis,” he
said. “You work close with
them (the probationers), you
stand a chance of helping
them and they learn to do
things to help their commu

with projects that would
qualify for community serv
ice, is urged to call the IPS
team at 887-3910, or 887-6571.
