...with Kenny Rogers during tour at UGA
UGA Campus Toured
By GENE GARRETT
On July 14, 1982, Kenny
Rogers was in Athens, play
ing tennis in the Crackerland
Tournament. Fourteen 4-
H’ers and 3 adults were tour
ing the University of Georgia
when they learned of Rogers
presence. Rogers and his
partner won the tennis
match and then the 4-H’ers
got their picture taken with
the singing star. Everyone
also got an autograph and
Tonia Odum stole a kiss.

The other events of the day
included meeting with Dean
Flatt of the College of Agri
culture; Dr. Tom Aaron, As
sociate Director of the
Extension Service; walking
the campus and viewing the
different buildings such as
the Chapel and Art Museum;
and having a picnic lunch on
the grass in front of the Cha

The University has many
different parts, one is the
Animal Science Center. We

drove over to this center and
saw goats, cows and pigs—a
lot of pigs. We walked
through the farrowing house
where sows give birth and
saw some pigs only 30 min
utes old. This hog farm had
pigs from babies to shoats,
and produces 5 to 7 thousand
pigs a year.
One aspect that I learned
about was the vast area that
the University covers. Many
miles of ground are included
in the campus.

some cloth, lace, a pair of
scissors and a picture to be
framed. As we worked, we
decided to get together about
once a month to do different
craft projects. The group
decided to form an Arts and
Crafts Club. The club would
make things to sell so we
could raise money for the 4-
H club.
In August, we again met to
make cloth picture frames.
In September, the arts and
crafts club met on Sept. 14.
At this meeting, Laura and
Amy Warbington taught us
