Land Judging Team To
Compete In Area Oct. 26
By BEN BAGWELL
4-H Land Judging can be
one of the easiest or hardest
judging events you can go
on. It just depends on how
you look at it. It can also be
one of the most misunder
stood judging events, too.
Some people ask how do
you judge land? Do you do it
by taking soil samples?
Well, it isn’t that easy. You
judge the land on its charac
teristics. Some are: the tex
ture of the topsoil, depth of
subsoil and topsoil com
bined, and the dope of the
land.
There are 3 different tex
tures of topsoil, these are
coarse, medium and fine.
Coarse soil is a sandy type
soil, while fine soil is a
clayey soil. Medium soil is
the best and is between the
other two. Medium soil is a
loamy type soil.
When you measure the
subsoil and topsoil you go
into a pit and measure it at a
designated point. This is one
of the easiest things to do in
land judging.
Slope of land is probably
the most important part of
judging. All you do is mea
sure the percent of land on
100 feet of land.
The other parts of land
judging are the erosion of the

land and the drainage of the
land.
In land judging, you have
to put the plot of land that
you are judging in a class of
land. There are 8 classes of
land. Four of these classes
can be used for crop cultiva
tion. The other four can be
