PIK Deadline March 11

On Jan. 11, Secretary of
Agriculture John R. Block
announced the details of a
voluntary program whereby
producers will be offered an
amount of commodity as a
payment-in-kind (PK) for
reducing acreage beyond
what is called for in the 1983
acreage reduction and paid
land diversion programs.
The signup period for pay
ment-in-kind and the acre
age reduction and paid land
diversion programs ends on
March 11,1983.
To be eligible to partici
pate in the PIK program, the
farm operator must first en
roll the farm in the acreage
reduction and paid land di
version program. No cross
or offsetting compliance are
applicable.

River Soil and Water Conser
vation District for assistance
in the construction of a dam
and lake.
Local soil conservationists
are investigating the pro
posed site for the dam.
If the site is feasible, a
design will be prepared. My
ers will contract with a reli
able contractor for the
construction of the dam. SCS
technicians will keep check
with the contractor to see
that the design for the dam is
being carried out. When the
dam has been completed and
checked by SCS for compli
ance, the local health depart
ment wiH make a check and
issue a permit to impound
water if all health rules and
regulations have been met.
Also the Soil Conservation
Service will certify that the
dam meets the minimum
standards and specifications

than 10 percent of the base or
no more than 30 percent of
the base.
Also operators may bid to
divert an acreage equal to
the entire crop base on a
farm, minus the applicable
required paid land diversion.
Participation in the whole
base PK will depend on CCC
acceptance of the bid. CCC
reserves the right to reject
any or all bids. The amount
of bids accepted will depend
on the supply-demand situa
tion for the commodity and
other relevant factors.
On a 10 to 30 percent level
of participation under PK,
the amount for the farm
shall be determined by mul
tiplying the percentage for
the crop time the farm’s
effective yield times the PK
acres.

acreage to a conservation
use. Wheat may be desig
nated if planted before Jan.
12, 1983. The wheat may be
cut for hay, silage or green
chops.
In exchange, producers
will receive bushels of the
commodity for which acre
age is diverted, however,
CCC reserves the right to
substitute on a bushel-for

Planting when the plant is
dormant reduces the amount
of attention required. Ad
equate soil moisture due to
frequent rains at this time of
year allows the root system
to continue to grow. When
spring arrives, the plant is
better established with a
root system capable of sup
porting new spring growth.

also transplant easier during
the dormant season, they
can be planted during the

Each producer will re
tainer stock, no roots are cut
in transplanting, minimizing
transplanting shock. Of
course, if a warm season
planting is necessary, water
the plants regularly and
thoroughly.
Camellias grow best in an
area that is semi-shaded
year round. Plants put in full
sun are less dormant during
warm periods in the winter
and sudden drops in temper
ature can cause severe in
jury. A planting site under
tall pines or on the north side
of a building usually pro
vides the proper conditions.
Camellias cannot tolerate
poorly drained soils. There
